Can anyone offer advice on a bank account for a new customer? My son's girlfriend only has a kid's saving account and she wants to open a current account. As she's a new customer there's no switch incentive to be had, does anyone offer incentives to new customers?
I'd be reporting your son to the police for a start.
And then tell her to bank with Nationwide.
Riiiiiiiiight...
🗣💩
This time last year when I last looked into it Santander were offering the best deals for under 18s and students.
Good interest on current accounts and all the online banking apps, cards etc. And wasnt that hard to get set up.
OK, just to clarify for the ****wits on here, she's 18, but has never felt the need for a current account. Her mother holds the bank book for her child savings account. She's now working full time and wants better control of, and easier access to, her money.
First Direct has won every customers services award going in forever, they'd be my first choice if I were getting a new account.
Have a look on Money Saving Expert, they have bank comparisons and may have something specifically targeted at those funny "young people."
MSE was my first port of call but they seemed to be concentrating on switching accounts. I'll take another look.
I’d be tempted by one of them “new fangled online accounts” offered by one of them new fangled online only Banks.. like Starling.
She’s probably more online savvy than you all realise.
Monzo or similar. Quick and easy to setup. Need your passport to hand. Would second Nationwide though too.
Would second Monzo - recently opened one for my monthly frivolous spending account. Seems pretty good, the set up was painless and had an operating account within 10 mins. Their app is well designed too.
OK, just to clarify for the **** on here
Fair cop, but was intended as humour.
Which I'm slowly giving up on here.
I believe Cougar is correct and would be a good choice.
Any bank except HSBC.
Oh and yes Bernie, please you know where the 🚪 is.
I've been with FD for over 20 years and they've been brilliant so I would recommend. Not sure what's wrong with HSBC, but I guess we each make our choices based on our experiences. The wife has been with HSBC for similar time as me with FD and had a similar experience with them and FD is part of HSBC anyway. Though the FD online banking app and software is much better than the HSBC.
I believe Cougar is correct and would be a good choice. Any bank except HSBC.
I agree with Cougar, I've been v happy with First Direct. but they are part of HSBC.
If online is preferred then Mono or Starling are good.
First Direct used to require a minimum monthly income into their current accounts to keep out the riffraff 😉, not sure if that is still the case.
Hmmm. I hadn’t considered the need for ID. She doesn’t have a passport yet so that could be a stumbling block.
Birth certificate should suffice...
They'll want two pieces of ID, one for name and one for address. Can she not just open a current account with the same bank the savings account is with?
Starling does it all via your phone...you record a video using your phone of you saying something and it does the rest. I can't recall taking a photo of any id when I did it. Took about 5 minutes to apply via phone and another 10 minutes for account to be activated and able to access from phone app. Card arrived 4 days later and was active.
I think Monza/Monzo/whatever my phone decides to autocowrong it to! is very similar.
Been with First Direct for ages and at first they were really the best but they've fallen down a bit. Their online banking is rubbish - can't search for transactions, downloading statements takes endless clicks etc., plus the phone banking thing, which used to be their strength, is also not so great now - they can take a long time to pick up. Plus, I applied for a mortgage with them and it was an utter nightmare for reasons too boring to list here.
Starling is very good. Quick and easy to open, no charges for using the card overseas and pays interest. Various other nifty things and features as well. The app is well laid out and easy to use as well as secure.
Can she not just open a current account with the same bank the savings account is with?
This. Unless you have a decent amount of money in it to earn interest, or are interested in add-ons like travel insurance etc, a bank account is a bank account, and I speak as someone with 20+ years experience in Financial Services, including retail banking.
For an 18 year old who needs somewhere to get her wages paid into, they're all the same.
Monzo works perfectly for lots of stuff. Other banks are available.
Any bank except HSBC.
Unf***ing believably bad - thought I'd left gloves in the branch, 1 hour trying to get through before giving up and going into the town to get them (tried calling as I wasn't sure that was where they were), asked for non-contactless card (I can press some buttons on a pad at no great grief to myself) but they gave me contactless anyway, twice card failed when abroad first time meaning spending hours in a branch in Malta trying to get money, second time made the assumption they were useless muppets and took a lot more currency with me than I was happy with which was just as well, second card failing was because they issued a new card and stopped the old one without bothering to tell me. Decided I'd had enough and and am moving banks again. Was going to go FD due to good reviews but as part of HSBC any branch banking means dealing with HSBC which I'm not going to do.
a bank account is a bank account
unless it's HSBC.
TBF though, when I opened the account they told me how secure they were. So secure that even I can't get at my money.
branch banking
What is this "branch" of which you speak?
branch banking
What is this “branch” of which you speak?
Its the Weatherspoons in the High St 🤣
What is this “branch” of which you speak?
Something us office/IT monkeys use for banking
I'm very happy with Nationwide. But as an older more financially established customer I get benefit from the free travel insurance, breakdown cover and 0.5% cashback on credit card spend.
The online banking is good but I'm a bit disappointed that if I receive a cheque I have to take it into the bank (by person or post) as they don't yet allow me to do it by phone/photo.
My 16yr old daughter went with Lloyds because they have a picture of a horse on the debit card! 🙂
