We will be in touch
I know I should be asking this on a VW forum but to be honest, the one I looked at confused me. Nowhere could I find a section dealing with faults.
My Wife's A3 cooling fan stayed on last night after she'd pulled up on the drive. It was still running about an hour later so there is clearly a fault. When I went out it had stopped though.
Turns out it had drained the battery. AA came out, started the car and told her to drive straight to a garage to get it fixed, which she did.
The garage, who is one we've used a lot and and I've always assumed they are trustworthy, have pronounced the entire fan faulty and needing replacement. That's be 300 quid please. FOR A FAN! Surely it's just the thermostat?
The guy reckons this is a dead common fault. Anyone had any experience of this? '04 Tdi.

Seems like the control module is built into the fan, hence the cost.
Had the same thing on my Mrs Golf GTTDI (150bhp), new fan solved the problem, hers was covered under the warranty mind.
Think it was a common problem with that model
bummer.
Thanks.
Can't comment diectly, but I had a bill of a similar amount for a dead fan on an A6 3.0. That was from a specialist; Audi would have been a lot more.
As yours is running, not sure you need an entire new fan, but could be a sealed unit, so entirely possible.
Is the fan behind the radiator in the engine bay, easy to get at? Buy a s/h one off ebay and install it yourself....
From what the AA man was saying over the phone, it sounds like it's an integrated unit which is hard to get in and out.
arnt audi a3s riddled with faults? and 300 pounds is probly quite cheap for an audi
Same happened on my last A3, luckily when it was under warranty. It is a known fault. If it was an Audi garage that did the work it may be worth discussing it with them to see if they will reduce the price of the repairs.
Yep had fan changed on my Golf (Under warranty) as well - crap design.
Indeed, same happened to my parents A3. Think it might be a bumper off job from memory. Dad had to disconnect the battery every night to stop it until it got fixed.
I had a different issue with my Golf, but also resulted in new fan unit all for a faulty sensor or something that was a part of the unit and could not be replaced individually which made the fan pulse.
Seem to be a well known and common issue with VAG's unfortunately.
Good job it's one of those reassuringly reliable German brands....
I had to have the fans on my VW Golf V5 replaced 3 times in 5 and a half years. So that was 4 sets of fans in total including the ones included when the car was brand new.
The bill was about £600 each time including fitting. First time was under warranty so no cost to me, second failure cost me but VW paid approx 50%, third again under warranty as the second set of replacements came with their own 2 year warranty.
Each time I was told that although VW new there was a fault they never changed the supplier so I was told to expect the fans to fail again in another 12 months or so!
So far with the Audi no problems (touch wood)
