🙂

3 days till the competition starts, 4 days till England make their move.

The atmosphere over here is amazing. You can buy flags and vuvuzelas at every robot. Shopping centers are adorned with flags of all nationalities. Posters along the roads, TV adverts, everything. The country and it's people have bought into this event whole heartedly.

Bafana Bafana are highly unlikely to win the cup, in fact they are highly unlikely to make it through to the second round - they have France, Uraguay & Mexico in their group - but they have won their last 12 matches in a row and anyway whether they win or lose their country will be proud of them 🙂

I'm an english speaking South African - so I have 2 (although slim) chances of success!

So . . . . . bring it on . . . . .!

🙂

I think my mute button is going to get some work for the next few weeks. Maybe try it with some of the radio commentary on instead. That noise is painfull after a while

Football is the most popular game in the world.

So for the majority of people, arguably it is the greatest.

Each to their own i guess. Not bothered either way tbh. Tend to get fed up with it after a while, due to the constant banging on about it. Still when the pubs are full i.e. when england are playing, we can have nice empty (cheeky?) trails.

Football is the most popular game in the world.

But it is only a game. Not a sport. Fishing is the most popular sport. 😛

The vuvuzela's can be a bit annoying and they are very loud - but it's part of our culture. In 4 years time you may be saying the same about all the whistle blowing in Brazil (they do love their whistles over there)

🙂

Depends how you measure it- in terms of participants, or watchers. 😆 Fishing can be a bit dry to watch.
And are all those who do it to provide food, or catch commercially counted as sportsmen?

I don't mind a good game of football. I won't ever cheer on a particular team, except maybe England, and then only cos it's my default team. I quite like watching Brazil play.

Still.

Arguably Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs is the best game in the world. And until you've actually played it, you can't argue against that assertion.

If South Africa is the first team that gives you a chance, and the other team that has a chance of winning is English-speaking...does that mean you'll be supporting New Zealand?

Football is the most popular game in the world.

Anything that takes the chavs & neds off the streets for a few hours has got to be a good thing.

Even better is when they go overseas and get themselves locked up in large numbers at events like a World Cup.

it's not even a game of two halves anymore, what with extra times varying so much.

No, I don't mean Hora's "staying power", I mean the board game:

Hungry hungry hippos was a miracle of engineering. How they could make something out of cheap plastic SO indestructible that it would withstand the extreme pounding and not break at the first game is quite astonishing.

You are all wrong. The greatest game in the world is Space hulk.

or maybe Talisman

or possibly Battlecars

or uh, Battletech.

So many. Jeez.

Bafana Bafana are highly unlikely to win the cup, in fact they are highly unlikely to make it through to the second round

I think the chances of FIFA allowing South Africa to be knocked out in round 1 are pretty slim. In fact I'd virtually garuantee an African side in the last 8 at least - Remember South Korea's good fortune with the refs in 2002 ?

Just hope it's not us who have to play against the opposition and FIFA at the same time.

Now if you'll just give me those bank details I was asking about . . . .

Trailmonkey - you really think it's that bent?

It doesn't have to be massively bent to make an effect, a booking here an offside there, of course if things are really desperate then the kind of decision that saw Spain suffer against Korea can always be applied.

There will always be cheating at the world cup, how about Argentina wiping away Peru's debt to it in return for a >4 goal victory in 78 ? Or Maradona punching England out in 86 in clear view of the linesman ? No one is ever going to convince me that that was purely a case of myopia.

I don't think that cheating always determines the eventual winners but I'm certain that it goes on.

Arguably the greatest game in the world . . .

You can argue your bollox off, but to me it's inarguably the 2nd most boring after The World 'Watching Paint Dry' competition.
So I'm not going to argue about it.

I'm in the USA with work just now, I've got a hotel booked for the weekend 200yrds from the big screens that are up in Washinton DC for the USA Engerland game. Looking forward to cheering on the USA.

And then Algeria and Slovenia and hopefully no one else!

And it IS the greatest game in the world! Unless you're watching Scotland that is....

I think you're underestimating quite how detested the vuvuzelas are outside SA. There were complaints about them by European broadcasters last year during the Confederations Cup and from many of the teams and coaches participating.

People will simply not watch as much of this World Cup if they have to listen to that infernal ****ing racket all the way through it. I'm surprised FIFA haven't banned them to keep their corporate partners happy with the viewing figures.

They are not universally loved here either Stef - believe me.
At one point FIFA were trying to ban both the vuvuzelas and alchohol from inside the stadia. Whether they were sucessful or not with either I don't know.

I'd have thought FIFA could call the shots to be honest. It's their party after all.

I vaguely remember reading a late 19th/ early 20th century quote which stated that mountaineering, horse-riding and sailing were all sports, the rest are games. No idea where it came from though?
