I'm trying to find out whether running clubs carry on all year or go into some sort of partial or full shut-down over 'winter'. The club I'm a member of goes into a less active mode when the clocks are set to GMT. Partially that is down to reduced daylight, partially the generally poorer weather. In the past we've seen weekly attendance drop off into October anyway but there's been a large hardcore of folks still attending. Last winter we adopted a less formal 'post to say you're running and seeing who wants to come with you' approach and still had decent sized groups out regularly.
FWIW, it's always trail running. We don't have access to any sort of run or to a wide selection of lit roads.
Mine did, and was actually more active in winter as it specialised in cross country
Not a club, as such, just a group of people who choose to turn up every week. Tends to carry on through winter but numbers are generally lower if the weather's really bad.
Yup, I am in a very large local running club which runs throughout the year. Unlike the more serious runners I just do the main Wednesday evening 7.30-8.30 pm run.
In the summer when those are daylight hours we do exclusively trail running but when they are nighttime hours we do road running.
I can't say that the numbers that come out vary a great deal throughout the year. We typically have about 8 different groups of varying abilities with about a dozen in each one.
My wife is. They do two training nights year round.
Last running club i was in (35 years ago!!!) was just as active in the winter as the summer... We did have access to a full floodlit running track though... Apparently it was knocked down a few years ago though.
The running club that I'm a member of meet all year round, Tuesdays are structured training, Thursdays are a gentler steady run and Sundays a longer run usually.
The number of attendees varies throughout the year but doesn't seem a significant drop in the winter.
The two main local clubs round here go all through the year, bump into them on our Monday night rides. Just fewer of them turn out. Like our Monday night rides
I was Aberdeen metro ... And I was alwYs a more active member in the winter - due to their access to a floodlit track.
Now I just run for fun round work at lunch time.
Yep, same time and same place all year round. If anything we’re busier in the winter as people prefer to run in groups in the dark.
Trails in the summer, roads in the winter. XC racing in the winter, roads in the summer.
My local Triathlon club and Jog Scotland group carry on through the Winter months.
We usually get more in the winter as everyone is on holiday in the summer.
But I go less in the winter as it's more road and less trail and I don't like tarmac. Also, that weird new member spike in January as everyone gets a new year's resolution and then we're mostly back to where we were by February
I don't join any club that would want me as a member.
I'm a member of a large triathlon club and all elements (including running) carry on all year. In fact, I would say there's more running in winter than summer as we participate in the local cross-country league and the trail running whatsapp group seems to light up more once the Autumn sets-in.
We do track running on a wednesday sharing the track with another local club and their numbers seem pretty huge all year round too.
Personally I've always thought of running as more of a winter activity than a summer one (Summer's for cycling surely) but that could just be me.
The club I was in used to be quite active in the winter as folk got their mileage in ready for the London Marathon etc..
I'd say we're almost more busy in winter as less are away on holiday, and lots of people (including me) use it more for motivation/accountability when the weather is crap.
We do tend to do our Wednesday social runs etc. on road routes in the winter more though, whereas it's almost all trails the rest of the year except Track sessions. We are based on the outskirts of a town though so it's easy to find well lit pavement routes.
MrsIHN is in the local running club and they go out all year - there's a 5km-ish and a 10k-ish on a Tuesday and a 10km on a Thursday, all trail running. They tend to get more in winter I think as people need the motivation to get out
Last two clubs, either wholly hill/fell running or the part of the club I engaged with was the hill/fell running part.
Both clubs were busiest over winter, fewer holidays being taken and not many big weekends races and almost no mid week races.
