Not sure about free, but the lightsaber and air hockey is good. Also, the WOOOO button is funny for 59p and iPity for getting your MR T game on. Otherwise, useful things such as Torch, Wikimobile, Facebook, Backgrounds, Remote, Maps, and Google Earth. Theres also the touch drums and Zippo lighter.

install yes, work no (apart from sound input ones as you can get a mic for the touch).

Yep, Flight Control is probably the best value 59p I've ever spent.

Subway Shuffle is also good. Lite version has the first few levels

Bookworm and lets golf are the games that I play on it. Facebook app's good, as is the eBay one. There's a ton of apps out there, and sifting out the crap is a nightmare.

Jailbreak it and use Cydia - lots of free stuff on there, but as Chomp said, finding them amongst all the crap is a pain.

I recommend subscribing to a few blogs to help sift for the better iPhone/Touch apps:

http://www.iphonealley.com/
http://reviews.cnet.com/iphone-approll/
http://weblogs.redeyechicago.com/iphoneblog/

Or just keep checking the Top 25 lists in iTunes.

Wikiamo, BikeGears, Stanza/Ereader, are just three I can think of. There are others, like Shazam, iCarRadio, LastFM, which I use on my iPhone, which either need a microphone or headset with mike, like the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 4Vi 'phones I use, and a phone network connection to really get the benefit.
