My laptop in the shed for zwift has died.
Apple TV looks like a simple and cheap replacement, except the only WiFi will by my android phone.
Will that work dies anyone know?

Don’t see why not. Android hotspots just appear as regular WiFi networks AFAIK.
If you don’t have an iPhone though, typing in passwords etc using the remote is not fun! 😀
When my wi-fi has gone on the fritz while using Zwift I have swapped over to my phone hotspot without issue.
That's on an Android tablet, though that shouldn't make any difference.
Hotspots are hotspots, WiFi protocols are device independent. The device connecting has no real concern about the device providing and vice/versa.
Regularly use my window pc on an Apple hotspot.
The one thing I'd say is having used apple TV and iOS with zwift the apple TV is a significant loser for the experience and I can't wait to get the macbook set back up again. You have limited bluetooth connections so you can only connect two at once so heart rate and smart trainer in which case your cadence will need to be offered by the smart trainer or you won't be able to connect it. Then let's say for example you want to select a new route and organise in elevation order. iOS just move pointer click, click, click. Apple TV use the remote to flick up n up n up n up n up just to get to the correct world then another flick down to get to it, etc. etc. its a pain in the bum! For some reason as soon as you get into the zwift app the remote becomes really slow to react and not as sensitive but inside of the apple TV interface it's a lot better.
