Got a Spreadsheet I've been working on for years and built up loads of info on. Last backed it up about 4 weeks ago and have since made loads of changes.

Just gone to open it and says "File Corrupt - ha ha ha ha!"

Anything I can do to recover all or some of the data?

By the way, its password protected (mention as this I know can be a problem. It allows me to type in the password but then gives me the above message.

Does it actually say the 'ha ha ha' bit - if so, sounds like a virus rather than an Excel error - M$ employees aren't usually that vindictive with their messages.

I was joking about the message. The message says...

"The file is corrupt and cannot be opened"

To make matters worse just gone to get my hands on my "safe" backed up version from the document store I use and this is the only file it can't locate when you go to access it!!!!

Excel 2007

Tried the "open and repair" option but no joy.

you can find Excel has left a 'working' copy of a file lying around but you'd need to know the size and a rough date time you opened it last to do a search for it.

Try changing the file extension to .TXT instead of .XLS

Then try opening the file with notepad.

If it works, resave the file with another filename and with the .TXT extension

Start Excel and try and open the .TXT file and try and use the text import wizard to sort it

Tried the TXT thing and because its got a password on it just comes up as crap.

Searching for a working copy could take some time!!

To fix corrupted Excel files, you may need to obtain a file extensions repair software program. Anyway, your first step is to launch Microsoft Excel and locate the corrupted file. Click on the option that says Open and Repair. You will be given another option which is to Extract Data if Excel is not able to repair the file. Choose this option and save the new file. Then, try to save it in an HTML format in case Excel stops responding. Choose File and Save as Web Page to open a new Save window. Select Entire Workbook and click on Save. Close the file, reopen the new HTML, save it as Save as Type, and choose Microsoft Excel Workbook. Rename the file so it will not overwrite the previous one. Use the software program to defrag your hard drive and repair other corrupted files.

There might be a temporary copy that windows made on your HD, search for all xls files then try opening any with strange filenames, you may get lucky.

Try opening (a copy of) the file using OpenOffice. It can sometimes open a file that real Excel cannot.
