[Closed] Anyone used DC Unlocker for, er, unlocking phones, 3g dongles and MiFi wotsits?

Basically, I've bought a Huawei MiFi wotsit that's locked to Orange (despite, it supposedly being unlocked on the Amazon classifieds ad).

Anyhoo, some Googling suggests that I can use DC Unlocker to unlock it, but I'll need to register and buy some credits (about a tenner's worth) first.

Has anyone ever used it? Any problems?

Which model? I unlocked my Huawei E585 without needing anything like that.

It's the E586. The Googling I did suggested that the E585 was a simpler prospect to unlock and the E586 was a bit trickier and needed the DC Unlocker software, but if you know different then I'm all ears...

I tried it. Didn't work.

A scam, I think.

I have an E586 from 3 Mobile. I read it was more difficult to unlock than the previous version so paid about £10 for credits and used DC Unlocker. It worked fine, I've had no subsequent problems.

BTW, my experience was from about ten months ago.

If the device is outside a contract, why not just ask the company it is locked to to unlock it? They are, after all, required to do it by EU Directive...

Cool, that matches what I've read elsewhere.

I assume you downloaded and installed the DC Unlocker software on your PC/laptop and there's no 'online' way of doing it?

Yes, I installed it on a PC. I can't remember the whole procedure so it can't have been too bad.

You could probably have a dodgy high street vendor do it for you for a similar price but I haven't tried that route.

I unlocked a T Mobile one last week, I was originally pointed in the direction of DC Unlocker but I am very cheap and found a free alternative on a giff gaff site which updated the firmware and worked perfectly. So I would do a search on giff gaff as unlocking is pretty fundamental to their service.

The dodgy High Street vendor has been tried and had no idea what the thing was...

I'll have a look on Giff Gaff, a branding-free firmware would be nice.

For £10 I'd go for the High St or market store vendor (I had a ZTE 3G dongle unlocked that way).

So, I know you'll all be dying to know how I got on so just to say that I bought the DC Unlocker credits (about eight quid in the end), and the unlocking process was pretty simple.

I can now see that what the High Street fellas do is money for old rope...
