Is it easy?

I've downloaded the Rom file from HTC just can't commit to clicking 'go' in case I brick my phone! Also not 100 % sure I've backed everything up, bound to be something I've missed ๐Ÿ˜•

If you do a nandroid backup from the recovery menu, your phone will be able to go back exactly how you left it down to your apps, texts, alarms etc. If you brick out on the other hand...

However, I read on androidforums that the Desire isn't really built to handle ICS (lack of dual core or something) so performance could suffer.

not sure bout the desire S but ive got my desire hd running ICS now after rooting and installing the ice cold sandwich rom.

as above, root it, do a nandroid back up and youll be fine. loads of good advice on androidforums.

Yep, do it! I'm running Fallout Evolution v5 on my Desire S and it's great.

It won't touch the contents of your SD card plus I imagine all your email/contacts etc will be backed up in gmail anyway.

So is this an official ICS ROM from HTC? Might go and have a look.

dont think any of them are official htc are they? just roms created by developers removing all the bloat from them and giving them their own ideas and looks i think.

some are better than others, but as long as you do a nandroid to back up where you are now, you can experiment to your hearts content and go back to where you were in 10 mins or so.

HTC have released an official ICS ROM for the Desire S but not for the original Desire;
http://www.htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads

My mate upgraded his "S" last week and seems very pleased with it. My "non-S" is running the latest CyanogenMod 7 (Gingerbread) ROM, not 100% stable* but stable enough that the extra features are worth it.

* 1) Occasional reboots - usually when I'm doing something CPU intensive while the phone's charging, but occasionally at other times too (once or twice a week).
2) Navigation seems to cause the phone to reboot, this is my main gripe, but as it doesn't affect Endo I can live with it.

With CM7, they have a 'gapps' bundle that you install in the same way as the ROM that puts Gmail etc on for you.

Which ICS ROM is that? I tried one last week but it was massively unstable so went back to CM7.
