My favourite waterproof jacket is beginning to show its age. It's a Gill Race that I bought years ago made with eVent fabric. The tapes on the seams have started to come away and rather than just toss it I'd quite like to keep it going if at all possible.

I see that you can buy tape that is "hot-ironed" in to place, has anyone done this successfully?

Ian

I used this stuff and got another couple of years out of a jacket - had to redo the hood every six months or so though:

The Wife redid my Endura commuting jacket when the seam tape fell off. Had to cut the mesh lining in a few places to get access, then tacked the lining back together. It’s still my foul weather jacket, purely because it’s now old and tatty and if I ruin it its no big deal. It’s done sterling service and had a hard life.

Don't whatever you do sent it off to LSR, they completely screwed up retaping one of my jackets, it all fell off within 30mins of using it in a complete mess, for which I was charged £40.

Careful use of an iron and a wet tea towel can restick what is there. I SAID CAREFUL.

I’ve just bought seam sealer from these guys. http://www.profabrics.co.uk/

Seemed cheaper and was recommended here or another forum IIRC.

Yet to fit, job for this weekend.

I bought some seam sealing tape off ebay.

I used it over some scrapes in my favourite jacket.

Some of it fell off after a couple of uses, some is still stuck on after a couple of years.

My repair is right in the middle of the back, eventually I sewed a patch in as well. It would probably have worked better if it was used on seams : )

My Gore Bike Wear Paclite jacket recently got a loose seam around the collar. Not bad for a 15-year-old jacket. I used Gear Aid Seam Grip, very easy to apply and has held up well so far.

I have used the 3 laye seam tape from. Pro fabrics as linked above on small rips on my altura jacket and shorts and it has tenaciously held them water tight.

Re the Profabrics stuff, found it a bit of a faff to fit. Worried about heat from iron but through a cloth tape wasn’t sticking, I assume not hot enough. Some wasted tape later just went for it and iron direct onto tape. More successful. Tape does seem picky about just the right amount of heat.

Not worn jacket yet so can’t comment about success or longevity.

Successfully repaired some eVent waterproof shorts with tape.

Sewed a patch onto the arse of some wearing out cycling waterproof trousers. The repair wasn't a huge success for other reasons but the tape I applied to the new seam held nicely.

Tried ironing the hanging hook and hood holder back onto my Rab jacket after it fell off - mixed results. Different tape though, not the stuff I bought from eBay, seems to need more heat.
