We will be in touch
Hi, im 14 and my mate is starting out on motorcross (Frank F harrison MX Track) and wants me to do it. I dont have much idea on motorcross, but i do on motorbikes (Building my own chopper) So i dont know what Motorcross bike to get, about 110cc i was thinking ? Also fairly sheap as i would probs fall of and snap the plastic etc. So any help, tip ect woud be usefull. Thanks
Im also sorted out with kit, all i need is a helmet and the place supplies everything 🙂
A used 125cc from one of the Big Four (Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, or Yamaha) will do you nicely. Buying very cheap (e.g £500) is a false economy, you'll spend that much again getting it safe and ready to ride. Don't worry too much about breaking bits, they are tough old beasts.
Used to race, pick yourself up a 125cc 2 stroke and make sure it's a KTM, missiles, plus better quality components. The 2 stroke will teach you all about corner speed, plus it is light, flickable, and tremendous fun. Will only cost you a quarter to rebuild the engine compared to a 4 stroke.
And it's motocross, not motorcross!
I do and it's absolutely fantastic! Exciting, great for strength and you'll learn loads about the bike from working on it.
It's very cheap for a motorsport, but it's not cheap. What kind of budget do you have for a bike? How tall are you?
Bear in mind they are race bikes. Something cheap will have been ragged to bits and could cost you more in parts than the bike cost. Bikes are tough and can take a lot, don't worry about plastics - they bend, but are cheap and easily replaceable compared to radiators, main bearings and gearboxes!
Apart from the bike, make sure you get alll the protective gear (lid, goggles, boots, trousers, top, knee pads and armour) and have somewhere to store and work on it and some way of transporting it to the track.
Also search http://forums.mxtrax.co.uk/ for loads of 'getting started' threads.
I am sorted for all the kit, i dont need to worry about that, But thanks. I can store and work on it, and transport it aswell.
I have and also lots of Enduro. MX bikes secondhand will have been thrashed to within an inch of their lives, so try to get the best one you can afford. Any of the Jap ones or a KTM, but as new as you can afford. You dont get a service history. If it looks worn it will be very worn out. Dont be fooled by one with new looking plastic bits, they are cheap and easy to replace - its what the engine is like that matters. Suspension is expensive to get fixed if its not been looked after, but a damaged engine is going to cost loads.
On a 2 stroke take the exhaust off fromt the engine side and look at the piston and rings, if the buyer wont let you do that (its only a couple of bolts) then dont bother buying it.
I tried a few 2 strokes, but ended up with 4 strokes as they lasted longer, gave a better power delivery and I like the engine braking characteristics.
Start building you your upper body strength now - you will need it.
I used to race motocross but stopped when the injuries took longer to recover prefer slower big trail bikes now.
If you are getting a MX bike don't worry about one that has been raced as at least you know that it will have been looked after as no one wants to travel for a few hours to a race and not finish due to poor maintenance. Avoid the ones that have just been used on the fields as they are never as well looked after.
There are plenty of training courses for MX where you can hire a bike for your instruction this way you can try 2 and 4 strokes to see what you prefer. I never got on 4 stroke after trying a couple and stuck with 2 stroke.
Do work on your fitness, it really is hard work to ride hard and you'll soon know what muscle pump is in your forearms as well as your thighs.
Agree on the physical effort! I walked like C3PO for a week after my first try out day! Couldn't put my own socks on for about 3 days I was so stiff! And that's with the help of an engine. I thought I was fit at the time and racing downhill lots. Incredible effort needed to control an angry 2 stroke!
