I've acquired a Mckay Dymek AM5 receiver from the 80s? What is it and is it any use these days? Someone said its for ham radio?

Google suggests it was a decent bit of kit back in the day (1970's).

I used to be into it. I've not heard of it, but have deciphered some of the google hits I got, including yours on reddit etc.

It's essentially an A.M tuner (it might have a built in amp and speaker etc) used for listening to commerical A.M stations. Not sure what the frequency range is but it will likely be Short Wave through to Long Wave and maybe Medium Wave. It's not for listenting to Amateur Radio/ Ham Radio i.e. 'communications'. It's an american make from what I can deduce and quite well regarded in terms of audio etc.

These days it is probably more of a collectors item for those into short wave radio. I would suggest you contact a few shops specialising in 2nd hand short wave radio. Practical Wireless magazine and Short Wave Radio magazine used to be full of adverts for such shops, but no idea where things are at these days. Maybe the RSGB website would be a starting point?
