So...I'm going skiing for the first time in a couple of weeks and I have to buy some things...

I need a jacket, a pair of trousers and a pair of goggles...the rest of the clothing kit list I can put together from my assortment of other outdoor kit.

My question is: is there a skiing version of chain reaction and does anyone have any recommendations for the above bits of kit?

Thanks in advance...

Take a look in TK Maxx for some cheap gear. Should be stuff in the sale. I've had some great bargains from there in the past.

Your british. You can ski in anything. Clothes dont make you a better ski - ist. if its your fist time, its a week in a year... do you really wantto spend that much on stuff. If your into other outdoor pursuits, think cold and windy, dress accordingly. Or Decathalon/Aldi/Lidl unless brands are important.... Just get good eye ware... snow blindness is painful

I should mention, maybe, that we're going to Bavaria...so having never been there before, let alone in the spring, I have no idea how best to prepare so am planning on taking tracksuit bottoms etc, but I'm thinking that taking a pair of salopettes (is it?) and a dirty great bit thick thermal jacket wouldn't be a bad idea.

I checked out TK Maxx earlier on this week and they didn't have any ski kit in, which did surprise me a bit.

Thanks for the advice so far tho.

Well what do you wear when out for a walk on a cold, damp winter day in the UK? Because it won't be any colder in the morning and probably very warm in the early afternoon. Skiing over Christmas can be dismally cold but by the end of March it's usually pleasant if sometimes a bit wet.

Hmmm. I did a few ski trips using endura full longs bike waterproof trousers and a gore cycling top. Winter bike gloves will probably do you too... take a buff and your almost there! Avoid big ticket brands unless you get into it. Spend the cash on apres ski!

Failing TK Max, we have used these guys for kit we didn't have from other activities - can't vouch for delivery tho http://www.skiwear4less.com/acatalog/Mens_Budget_Ski_Wear.html

Lidl are currently doing ski wear

Trespass are sometimes worth a look - though having said that I just bought cheap ski socks from them and took them back as they were pretty crap

As a beginner tracky bottoms are not going to be ideal when you fall over and get them wet !!!

If you have mates who ski borrowing gear can be the best bet for your first time.

This time of year weather can be like a hot summers day in the UK or it can be hammering it down with snow and cold. Layers are the key.

I wear a combination of a HH base merino layer that I use for winter bike riding too, micro fleece if its cold and a breathable shell jacket with no padding. If its really cold I might put on a layer underneath the micro fleece but this is really rare. Wear a pair of salopettes and sometimes long johns underneath if its really cold.

So layers are the key 🙂

I've used Trespass stuff for years, no problems. TK Maxx, Trespass stores, Millets.
Enjoy!

I had some Trespass sallopettes - very nasty.

Helly Hansen and Columbia are reputable brands at good prices.

But to not commits so much money a decent gore-style shell jacket with 200 weight fleece and a lifa base layer for your top will do. For the legs you can use a gore-shell trouser but it would have to be wide fitting at the bottom, so maybe some cheap sallopettes would be good.

Fisalp were a french brand that you might find cheap - I had some of their sallopettes and they were excellent.

I imagine the basic stuff you need is similar to what I found for my Snowboarding:
-Good baselayers are essential, go with merino wool as opposed to smelly helly synthetic
-Loose fitting (reasonably priced) sallopettes. They dont have any stretch in them, and you need room for movement so I went for 2 sizes bigger.
-A really snuggly jacket. Mine is Firefly, an ace snowboarding brand...and looking cool is just as important *giggle*
-Oakley Goggles, only the best
-Keep your head warm, and wear a buff or something to cover your face and ears when its windy/blizzardy
-SUNBLOCK!

Bavaria sounds exciting! I think this year im staying in scotland for the snowboarding. Not done skiing since the 90s but but I was thinking about taking skiing lessons as well - but let me know what Bavaria is like and I might well travel next year. 🙂
