is it easy? And can you easily restore the factory settings if you need to send it in for any warranty stuff?
ta
1) Yes...well it depends, do you need an unlock?
2) Yes
hmmm dont know if i need an unlock. It'll be on Orange but i only want to jailbreak it so i can run a better homescreen with appointments etc showing on it. I'm not planning on using it on another network.
Do i have to unlock it first before it can be jailbroken? Is there a good site for info, i found one a few weeks ago which had loads of advice but cant remeber what it was now!
Well if the phone is on Orange and you plan on staying on Orange then you do not need to worry about preserving your baseband for an unlock. For the record, you cannot unlock until you JB.
Anyhoo.
Second queston: Are you on a PC or Mac?
its on a PC
Righto. You have 2 choices. Limera1n and Greenp0ison. Both do more or less the same thing as both use Geohot's bootroom exploit. I used Limera1n so would suggest using that.*
Instructions can be found here.
*If anything happens to your phone I am in nooooo way responsible 8)
yes but why bother? if you want a phone that only does have what it promises, crashes sporadically and has over 1000 badly designed themes then just buy a nokia! that said my iphone4 whilst the phone appears to have no issues it is still intermittently non contactable despite displaying full signal, I know this because I've had people tell me they can't get hold of me, yesterday my employer tried to call me and I was stood next to him and nothing, who do I blame? o2 or apple? I hate them both.
i've jailbroken mine for the reasons you describe. Had LockScreen installed ( think thats what its called). Got weather, appointments, texts and emails displayed on the lock screen.
I did mine before the software update so it was mega easy, just went to a website.
Had no problems whatsoever with it crashing or being unstable. Far better than Windows Mobile and Android phones i had before.
cheers.
looks fairly straightforward. Is there anyway apple can find out a phone is jailbroken, eg through itunes next time i sync?
And if there is an iphone operating system update, can i still do the update? I guess i then need to wait for a new jailbreak for the updated apple software?

Nope.

As the new jailbreak exploit that Limera1n and Greenp0ison use is bootroom based the only problem you may run into with upgrading to say iOS4.2 is losing the untethered part of the JB. Essentially that means you would then be thethered to your PC, as in you would only be able to reboot the device when connected to the PC.
So in summary, just hold off until you read it is safe to do so on places like dev-blog or twitter feeds from the likes of Chpwn, Comex and MuscleNerd.
great info there, thanks Jamie.
