my GF has virgin broadband via cable, once more than one of us is on web it all goes belly up. The router is a very old Belkin 54G thing which I got rid of many years ago as they were trouble, so I've bought a new net gear one that can handle multiple downloads.

I've no experience of cable so what do I need to know?

The router is cable specific, do I simply call virgin and ask for username/log on etc????

You should just plug you're modem into the router and it works. That's how mine works anyhow.

Nah, it's a very simple job that doesn't require a call to the Delhi call centre, thankfully!
All you need to do is unplug the cable modem from the mains (so it 'forgets' your old router) connect the new router to the cable modem, power on the router, then the modem.
The cable modem then recognises the new router without any further work.
Down to you to setup the router after that. IIRC, the settings you need to change on the router are detailed on Virgins site. HTH.

I just changed mine the other day actually..

I had to copy the MAC address from the old router to the new one to get it working. It found the domain name automatically from there, just had to change the password from the standard admin/admin, and input the name of my wireless network and select the type of wireless security to WPA2, and i disabled the SSID broadcast..I basically just googled a few things, no real idea if there is anything else i needed to do?

I was just looking into this for my mate as well.

I take it the wireless cable router/modem drom d-link etc is just a case of plug it in and away it goes with a bit of a tinker with the settings. or do you need passwords and usernames etc?

Thanks guys, after spending 15 minutes on hold to virgin (on my mobile as the kids keep forgetting to put landline cordless phone back on charger ) I had a thought all of the password stuff would be in the modem so hung up and checked back here and you've confirmed what I suspected.

Plugged in new router, set up security settings and working a treat.

The previous router wasn't encrypted and found an alarming number of people (presumably waiting at the bus stop across the road) had been using it.

So I couldn't think of anything more relevant to name the new SSID other than 'HelloBusW&nkers"!!! 😆
