I bought a book "Change your life with NLP" and just started reading it.
There are a couple of things in my life I want to change (better job, less time on the forum, lose weight, get fitter, stop procrastinating etc) and I was quite taken by the simple message:
"If you keep doing things the same old way, you'll keep getting the same old results. If what you're doing isn't working, do something different"
I'm sure I can filter out all the Rah-Rah and snake oil bullshine, but what I want to know is...
...does any of this stuff work?
Can it take a bloke who always turns to Singletrack or teamtalk (or even worse, freecell) when he should be "working" and turn him into a fulfilled, prosperous more satisfied person?
Not that I'm unhappy - I consider myself to be one of the happiest, luckiest people around with more friends than most and a family I love, and a wife I'm madly in love with, and pretty good fitness levels for my age. I just want even more, that's all.
i know people who swear by it and they all seem to have fked up lives
i've dealt with all manner of coaching and self help theories in my time, common sense and discipline seem to have the upper hand over anything else.
i'd say only three 'rules' are necessary
1. if you want to do something, do it - there is never a 'right time' - babies, career changes etc - there are always reasons not to - ignore everybody
2. it's easier to get forgiveness than permission - people are pre-programmed to say no to requests even if there is no reason why they should say no
3. the 'worst that could happen' rarely happens
do what you what, but do it......'if you need to shoot, shoot don't talk'
PS You know already I'm not worth listening to......

Seriously if you are able to function as well as you say then do you NEED NLP etc?...or surely it's about self discipline and presumably, if you are as good at life as you say you are, all you need is a bit of motivation?
Yes, its the motivation I'm after.
I don't know how NLP will help (not that I knwo much about it but I have read about therapy a bit)
You say you need more motivation. What for? Surely you need to find goals that are important, whatever they may be? Better dad? Win photography competition? Win bike race? etc etc
The motivation to stop browsing the forum and to start doing some work for one thing.

all this stuff is usually confused with feelings. its all actions.
you want to paint? paint? don't feel that it would be nice to paint. do it.
make a decision to run at 7am. then run at 7am. take out any feelings. just run. for no other reason than that you decided that you would run at 7am.
and no, it's not easy to do, that's why most people fail to achieve what they'd 'really like to do' - really liking is worth SFA
Ive read "NLP for dummies" and a couple of Paul McKenna "I can ...." books and didnt get too much out of them.However, both my brother and his girlfriend are qualified NLP practitioners. I did a few sessions with my brother after breaking my collarbone at a motorcycle Enduro event.I lost my "bottle" for riding at any sort of speed and the sessions really did help me to get my confidence back.Similarly,I did a few more sessions after breaking a bone in my hand whilst out MTBing and again felt marvellous afterwards.What I was going to say is dont knock it til youve tried it, but Im aware it can get very expensive (my sessions were free of course).I know that a lot of the top motorcycle riders use NLP based techniques so they obviously benefit from it.I wouldnt say NLP is essential to achieving success in life as there are a lot of self-motivated people out there who have made it without NLP, but for me it works.

I think you are far more likely to get benefit from going to a practicioner in NLP than reading a book on it.
I am not sure what you describe really needs NLP anyway - IIRC ( and I don't know a great deal abut it) its more for altering negative thought patterns and so on that for giving you motivation and to remove feelings of dissatisfaction.
So I think probably the wrong answer to the wrong question.

I don't think I have negative thought patterns and my feelings of dissatisfaction will sort themselves out if I'm moving towards my goals.
I just need the motivation to stop procrastinating then.

It was very good John. The pads are (were) mine- 1 wet descent that was.
Back to the subject at hand- I didnt know what procastination meant, so I looked it up. It confirmed my previous observations that you are just an old lazy chump...
I've read a bit on NLP, I'd say it's a good positive way of looking at things. Don't necessarilly expect a magic bullet affect though, and I'd avoid anything written by Paul Mckenna!
I found 'NLP the art and science of getting what you want' by Dr Harry Alder, ISBN 0-7499-1489-0, an easy reading and eye opening book. Learning about and reading signals in others is very interesting! For sales, customer interfacing, meeting people etc....

I read a bit more of the book last night. I was really impressed with the notion that your subconscious treats positive and negative instructions in the same way. So if you say to a kid "don't stick baked beans up your nose" it plants the thought that wasn't there before and lo and behold - a kid with baked beans up his nose.
A good 70p's worth from the PDSA clearance bin.
Try to find the trick or treat episode where Derren Brown tells the young woman 'dont kill the kitten' - worrying, but funny.

BigJohn how'd the NLP work out for you in the end? My boss yesterday suggested to me this maybe something for me to think about.
