Plug it in, go to computer, search for wireless network, stick the code into the box and voile.

we have tried nearly everything remotely including tech support from his isp, I'm sure I may solve it If I was there, but I'm in London :(.
He has a usb adsl modem which works fine but 2 different adsl wireless router/gateways that won't work, we can see the router admin page and the box appears to be connected to the internet from the status lights but still can't bring up a webpage using a wired connection

The quick option is to set-up the ip of the router to match the laptop.

Can you ping the box?

If not he probably needs to 'spoof' the pc's ip on the router, it's the quickest way to access. basically the router is good to the web, but not to the pc, and the pc is ok, so log into the admin page for the router and reset to the pc's ip and subnet. ( WTF use the same ip for both of them? YUP)

open a command window/cmd.exe and type

ipconfig/all

reset the router to match and restart.
