MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
...you've been to. Yeah, I know, everyone buggers off to the bar for a chat while the support's on, but every so often there's a support that, y'know, might get somewhere, one day.
To kick off, here's some I enjoyed over the years:
Blondie supporting Television
Dire Straits supporting Talking Heads
Queens Of The Stone Age supporting Hole,
then Foo Fighters at a later gig
Blood Red Shoes supporting Howling Bells
Chew Lips and The Joy Formidable also supporting Howling Bells
The Divine Comedy supporting Tori Amos
there have been many, many gigs, but these are particular stand-outs for me.
Anyone else?
Happy Mondays surporting Oasis at wembley years back. Shame Oasis turned up to be honest!
Well, Xipe, you've got me there!
Little Angels supporting Bryan Adams at the Arms Park
Thunder, Donnington '92 -
Thunder were on very early in the day and rocked the place to pieces. Awesome! Danny can't dance, though!
Skin - Supporting Little Angels (I think) Great band, sadly missed! (Not the Skunk Anansie lot!)
and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3F92dD8iqM
The Answer - Supporting Thunder. A great band on their first "big" tour as a support band. See them now. Really. They rock! They played a superb set supporting AC/DC this year. Dare I say it, but I think the support band were better than the headline....
Yes, I like cockrock/poodle metal/hair metal, call it what you will. Don't care!
James either supporting The Smiths at the Dome or Lloyd Cole at the Top Rank. I can't remember which it was though after 24 years or so. Which ever it was Del Amitri was the support at the other and they weren't bad either.
Joy Division supporting The Buzzcocks. Absolutely amazing live.
The Skeletal Family supporting the Sisters of Mercy in Sheffield (1983/84 ish)
Jane's Addiction supporting Nine Inch Nails earlier this year.
I predict good things for those young, punky upstarts 😉
AC/DC, Nils Lofgren and The Stranglers Supporting The Who @ Wembley 1979
Arctic Monkeys supposedly supporting Maximo Park just after Arctic Monkeys' first single came out. Maximo Park ended up having to go on stage before them and didn't look too impressed about it...
Vivian Stanshall supporting Taj Mahal in 1981 or '82. I loved Viv!
And Caitlin Cary supporting The Handsome Family - two of my fave artists on the same bill! 😀
Beck surporting the verve at haigh hall, wigan.
Noel Gallagher supporting Paul Weller at the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall (IIR) several years back. No one knew he was there!
Ok one from way back when – Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers supporting Lynyrd Skynyrd
Pantera supporting Megadeth at Glasgow Barrowlands, around '93 I think - Mustaine & co. looked decidedly timid taking the floor after Pantera destroyed the audience.
breakneckspeed that's one gig I would like to have seen.
Teenage Fanclub/Idlewild supporting The Pixies at Meadowbank Stadium Edinburgh Aug 2005.
Beck supporting Radiohead at Meadowbank Stadium Edinburgh Aug 2006. possibly one of the best gigs I have ever seen , barring festivals.
Silversun Pick-ups/Nine Inch Nails supporting Foo Fighters at the same venue Aug 2007.
Some of the biggest names gigging in Edinburgh as part of T on the Fringe (Edinburgh Festival). Now due to ****in ridiculous rules on advertising alcohol , no money is available to pull bands and support of this calibre and the Meadowbank gigs are now defunct. 👿
da funk
Cheap Trick supporting Motley Crue 1985/86 Sheffield City Hall
The Cult Supporting Van Halen 1992 Houston Astro Arena
The Van Halen gig was without a doudt the loudest concert I have ever been too
Bon Jovi supporting KISS in 1984 was a memorable gig at Stafford Bingley Hall.
Spermbirds supporting Chumbawamba germany 92
the bolshoi supporting Spear of destiny at the barras 86
I saw Coldplay supporting Terris at the Venue in Edinburgh in 2000 in front of about 300 people. I preferred Terris, what do I know. Also saw the Hives supporting the Yo-Yos at the Cathouse in Glasgow on my birthday, approximately 2 minutes before they became massive, that was good.
Muse brought My Chemical Romance and Biffy Clyro with them to Wembley, even though the gig sold out before they announced supports, which was a nice treat, to bring along 2 bands that could fill a big venue by themselves.
Symposium and A toured together twice, those were incredible gigs... Biffy Clyro dual-headlining with Hell Is For Heroes (though really, it was a HIFH support in the end) was another great one, HIFH just before their decline and Biffy just as they took off.
But the 2 best ones for me, would be Biffy supporting OPM at the Liquid Room in Edinburgh, and Hundred Reasons supporting Sunna, I think, at King Tuts- I'd seen both bands before and not really got it, but those nights really switched me on to them, a few years later and between the two of them, I've seen about 30 gigs better than anything by any other band. Not bad.
Seeing the King Blues supporting Carter USM was ideal, now I know not to see them again.
Quality supports
Mew - Martin Gretch
Silent Running - Little Steven
FM - Bon Jovi
Faster Pussycat - Buns n toasties
Bon Jovi - Kiss
Honeymoon Suite - Saga
Blackfoot - Scorpions
Wendy and the rockets - Bryan Adams
My ex wife - Steps (never saw it but would have loved to watch that embaressing spectacle 😀 )
Thee Headcoats supporting Mudhoney at Shepherds Bush Empire, that was a quality gig.
Sisters Of Mercy were the headline; New Model Army & The Skeletal Family were support. Ace gig. Oct 1984 I think, Huddersfield Town Hall.
Still the best gig I've ever been to
NMA Thunder & Consolation/Impurity tour?..Levellers supporting saw them a fair few times thought they were going places!
NMA Reading awesome gig Pogues headlining Shane came on shitfaced & Crap mate and I looked at eachother and said lets do one...were NEVER gonna top the Army
John _Drummer that sounds like a classic!
Verve supporting The Smashing Pumpkins in September 93 then in December 93 Verve headlining with Acetone (great American band) second on the bill and a little known Mancunian band called Oasis third on the bill.
Good Thread....
the one that stands out for me is from years ago......
Leeds University....
headline = Nils Lofgren
Support stole the show TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS ...
Pulp supported St. Etienne back in early 90's. Also somewhere in another gig was a support band called Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie, which in itself isn't amazing, but one of the 2 girl backing singers was Shirley Manson who was soon to bugger off and do Garbage instead.
