Last night I set off for an hour's strenuous biking and felt absolutely crap. It was agony trying to force myself up the short climbs. An hour later, I was absolutely flying and felt great.

What gives? Any ideas?

One of those things, a "bad day", fatigue, stress, low blood sugar etc etc who knows?

Always takes me ages before I feel good if I set off at a high pace

Happens to me sometimes. Couldnt be arsed last night at all, could barely manage any climbs. Stopped at my mums for a coffee then on the way home I rode at a fairly decent pace.

Blood sugar was fine, it was post-meal. Didn't have a lot of carbs in my camelbak either.

maybe the body is rather complex and the nervous/endocrine systems for example doesn't know that we want things to be simple and easily explained?

Complicated.. I'm sure it is. Hence the question 🙂

you forgot to take your EPO? Happens who knows

Done 45 milers off road rides feeling terrible just plodding all day and then flying the next day for no apparent reason despite days previous effort no wonder the top atheletes are surrounded by scientist who know this stuff but without some blood works done on you and serious analysis who knows

Surely that's the problem???

I would have thought that without the Lance type analysis and feedback it would be difficult to say.
Good day/bad day
Too soon after eating.
Stress.
Tired
First hour was just a warm up.

"an hours strenuous biking"

thats your problem right there, im not surprised your body couldnt be arsed, its hardly a tempting invite.

you need to work on your foreplay somewhat.

No, cos I felt great after an hour.

SOOB - what's wrong with an hour's strenuous biking? I had a great time (after a slow start)! Flat out on Swinley singletrack 🙂

if you think that is a "great" time, you need some time set aside for quiet reflection.

I felt crap at first ie my legs were tired and sore, then I warmed up and felt good. Did you miss that part?

Why do I need to reflect?

I rode very fast around bone-dry tight twisty singletrack on a beautiful warm summer's evening. I don't see why I am wrong to enjoy this..?

Mol - been training like a loon since my mid teens from weights to running, from biking to martial arts stuff - I still can't quite avoid those random dips in performance. Particularly notice it in the "extreme" exertion stuff likes weights and racing (running) - I try all sorts to avoid it but I think sometimes you are either right on it or a bit off.

Surfing is the most extreme - sometimes you are fired up and can do no wrong, other times you are knackered and surf like a total spazzock.

My morning ride (a set distance of mostly off road) also varies by up to 5 mins - sometimes able to hammer it, other times it's just hard work.

Mm I can imagine that something skill based would take a big hit if you were tired.

I'd ridden a long hard ride on Saturday, and still not recovered so it seemed. Although I'd eaten well. Just wondering what the basis of this tiredness is, and why it'd go away after 20 mins pushing...

Mol - possible mild virus?

Is the tiredness overall or just muscle aches?

I feel pretty good overall. It was just my quads, they hurt like hell. So riding tiredness.. but what made me curious was why I felt so much better at the end of the ride.

What causes tiredness 3 days after a ride?

Who knows? I'd go with your muscles getting warmed up. Takes me 45 minutes or so to get a proper 'flow' on sometimes. Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason, it just 'is'. Stop over-analyzing it

Not warmed up enough? How long before the ride had you eaten? Lack of hyrdration?

A 10k trail race is a similar example - I feel utterly dreadful at about 7km then always get a second wind for the last km. Go from hardly being able to run to a flat out sprint (every time except once when I just hobbled over the line) - partly in the mind I guess?! I also have a flood of something (hormonal) at the end of a race and feel completely elated and on a high. Most odd. I then ache for a few days!

I was unusually tired despite having done my normal recovery things.. hence the post. If it always happened this way I wouldn't post 🙂
