We will be in touch
My missus has bought a few things from Europe recently. She's been charged full retail on each, in France. The first has arrived and she's been landed with a 60 quid import tax thingy. The second item is more expensive and thus is expecting a larger import tax.
Is there any way she can (is it even a thing?) claim back the French tax, so she's not being taxed twice on the same item? Much like those tax return booths at airports, you know?
She's looking at an extra 160 quid on her purchases currently 🙁
a) ask for a refund equivalent to French vat from seller
b) claim back UK vat if seller is paying vat to HRMC
Always go for plan a here; put the onus on the seller to sort, doing so yourself will break your spirit and most likely fail.
Thanks kelvin, I'll suggest plan a 👌
They're probably just doing what planet x are and keeping what would have been the vat portion. They're under no obligation to refund that portion to you.
Assuming it's French Vat you been charged, You will have to reclaim directly from the French Douane, easiest when you are next at a French border. If however you have an invoice that clearly shows UK Vat, then yoh should ask for a refund from the shipping agent as theyve incorrectly charged. If that fails, you could try a local VAT reclaim at a beurea.
Edit, first port of call on French Vat would be with the seller, though they are not under an obligation to not charge you!

A lot of that going around at the moment, Sonder, and others.
They aren't under any obligation to refund but I'm surprised that they aren't required to show a different price. I.e. £100 incl. VAT to the UK. £100 not including VAT to the ROW. If they are keeping the VAT. If they are paying the extra to the Govt I guess not. Although then shouldn't you be able to claim it direct from HMRC?
