depends do you want to BYO the young lady or get one when you get there 😉

Of the 2 I've been to Amsterdam and would suggest Copenhagen same fell less people (Brits/Russians) getting smashed/stoned/looking for hookers

We went to Oslo for NY a few years ago, and I probably wouldn't recommend it tbh.

Actually pretty quiet apart from a crazy few hours with fireworks. No pub or bar scene to speak of, and most shops and restaurants were closed for the few days that we were there. It was actually really hard finding anywhere to eat.

We were with Norwegian friends and went to a house party which was the norm apparently.

So I'd vote for Amsterdam!

"Copenhagen" is actually the correct answer to most "where should I go" type questions.

Assuming you're in the UK and need to hop on a flight for this trip, why stay so far north? How about Nice, Barcelona or Rome?

Yes but the eye candy walking around Copenhagen will annoy the young lady.

NY for me most probably cheaper than Oslo 😆

Amsterdam goes full nuts at midnight as the Yoot/stupid set of a bazillion fireworks in packed squares and with no thought of safety. I was there with the ex. 12 years ago and I was genuinely on edge following a huge box of Chinese firecrackers was set off as I came round a corner - they were 6' ahead of me. Plus all the decent bars were invite only and restaurants seemed to closing very early ahead of the impending Armageddon.

People don't get smashed in Copenhagen as you need to get a mortgage to do so. I'd imagine Oslo to be similarly priced.

I've spent New years in amsterdam and yes it is crazy, everyone piles into the streets and lets off fireworks on the road, you have to watch out but the atmosphere is great. We didn't have any problems getting a drink and the 3 level grasshopper is always fun 😉 they had live music in there too.

In my limited experience, Oslo is vastly more expensive. I was able to get a beer in a neighbourhood bar in Copenhagen (circa 2010) for about £5. In Oslo two years later i couldn't find much below £10. One bar was flogging Newcastle Brown Ale for £14 a bottle 😆

What he said. Drinking out in CPH is do-able, and excellent beer readily available (5 quid for a craft beer); Norway - not (10 quid for a bottle of Corona).

In classic STW style - Lisbon or Berlin.

Never been to either on NYE however....

We were out drinking until 3-4am on a wednesday night in Lisbon and it was packed with a great atmosphere (Barrio Alto). There was a guy from Copenhagen in a bar there buying rounds for the whole place because booze was so cheap compared to Copenhagen.

Berlin - cool city anyway but we were in Munich last year and the fireworks around the Reichenbachbrücke were utterly mental. No official display just ludicrous amounts of them being set off by drunk people with no regard for health and safety - genuinely scary at times but a pretty amazing experience. People there were saying it was nothing compared to Berlin on NYE.

Why would you want to drink a bottle of dog when in Copenhagen? Don't they do decent beers there?

Granted it wasn't NYE but we were in Stockholm in September. The hotel we stayed in happens to have one of the trendier bars on the waterfront and my beer was only about £6 a pint, strong IPA style beer. Mrs_d's wine cost an arm & a leg mind 😉

I've done both on NYE. I hated Amsterdam as it's full of the aforementioned pricks getting stoned and asking where the red-light district is. It's also pretty expensive.

Oslo is silly prices for beers out but I went to a house party with my friends who live over there and it was, well, a house party. With the right people that's not a bad option though.

I'd take the house party in Oslo any day, then head over to Bergen on the train for a few days.

I think central Amsterdam would be as described, full of pished visitors. However we do it with family in one of the towns just east of the city and I have to say its the best possible way to celebrate. The Dutch do attack the sky on new year's eve and its a matter of pride between village about how much ordinance they can set off. You'll be invited in by all and sundry and have a great time. I love the Netherlands.

I used to live in A'dam some years ago and my recollection is you needed to have something organised to be guaranteed a party, but that seems to be the same for many big cities now.
