I very recently purchased an mp3 player off classifieds with loads of stuff still on it. Some good, some very good and some not so very good. Somewhere in the middle was Alice in Chains. 'Them Bones' is truely awesome (even better once I'd done a 5min remix on it).

was this their only epic choon or am I missing something?

Dirt was the only decent album they released IMO

dirt is excellent
Ain't found a way to kill me yet
Eyes burn with stinging sweat
Seems every path leads me to nowhere
Wife and kids household pet
Army green was no safe bet
The bullets scream to me from somewhere

Here they come to snuff the rooster, aww yeah, hey yeah
Yeah here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain't gonna die
No, no, no, ya know he ain't gonna die (x2)

Walkin' tall machine gun man
They spit on me in my home land
Gloria sent me pictures of my boy
Got my pills 'gainst mosquito death
My Buddy's breathin' his dyin' breath
Oh god please won't you help me make it through

Here they come to snuff the rooster, aww yeah
Yeah here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain't gonna die
No, no, no ya know he ain't gonna die

the new album isnt bad but obviously lacking layne

a few good tunes on facelift, bleed the freak is my fav off there

make sure you check out their 'inbetween' eps sap and jar of flies booth excellent more acoustic

the mtv unplugged is pretty good too

basically they are in my all time top 10 bands!

angry chair... solid tune. Their 'unplugged' album is first class.

They reformed recently minus the singer obviously.
The guitarist is now on vocals and the years haven't been kind. He's a dead ringer for Mark Gatiss from league of Gentlemen now, I couldn't take it seriously.

I saw the 'new' Alice in Chains a few months ago, and they were very good. The new lead singer sounds enough like Laine Stayley (sic?) to not spoil the songs.
The new album is a bit hit and miss, some good, some absolute gash.
Rooster is a choon, their Unplugged album was very good.

'Tripod'/Alice in Chains, the album after Dirt is far superior, one of my favorite albums ever actually. All their albums have good stuff on, but AIC is the most consistent. Would? (Dirt era) is one of my favorite songs ever too. New album is worth getting, some good stuff, but a bit hit and miss.

Track down jar of flies/with the sap ep too. Personally I loved the old AIC sound - the new album isn't bad, but just comes across as a bit of a cheap immitation!

'Dirt' was an album I seemed to listen to almost constantly from '93 -'95, & I hold it in higher regard as an album than their others. 'Junkhead' would probably tie* as my favourite ever song, & I probably still listen to it 3 or 4 times a week. Staleys haunting vocals have a massive impact in that one.

(*with 'New Millenium Cyanide Christ' by Meshuggah, if anyone cares... )

man in a box and we die young were my faves as facelift didn't have a bad tune on it. Dirt onwards was a bit too fluffy for my liking.

Mad season was best thing that layne stayley ever did by a long way. if you haven't got the album hunt it down

Weirdly, I too am going through a massive Alice in Chains phase right now. Seminal grunge band.

I think their best songs are:

Man in the Box
Nutshell
Rooster
Angry Chair
Nutshell
Rain When I Die

Yeah, I heard them recently and got hold of a few albums. It's amazing how well they shift between absolute bilge to pure genius. I guess it's a fine line.

I have been a massive fan since they release their first album:

Facelift: Features some amazing songs (We Die Young, Man in a Box etc) and some very average tunes.
Dirt: Stunning album from start to finish
AIC: Loved this one to (check out Heaven Beside You, amongst others). I strangely found this one went well with reading H.P. Lovecraft, for some reason.
Sap/Jar of Flies: Good albums, although I've never got heavily into them.
Unplugged: Up there with Dirt and still best "Unplugged" album I have ever heard.
Black Gives Way to Blue: A fantastic return. Jerry does most of the vocals, but the new singer/guitar player is very good too. There are a couple of average songs, but nothing bad.

I also saw them on their last tour and they were very very good indeed.

If we're just picking one song from each release:

Man in the Box (Facelift)
Right Turn (Sap)
Angry Chair (Dirt)
I Stay Away (Jar of Flies)
Heaven Beside You (Alice in Chains)
Check My Brain (Black Gives Way to Blue)

Personal favourite is Angry Chair.

angry chair is a top tune, but brings back memories of very bad times, still at least i got my arse in gear and kicked it rather than doing a layne 😕

All good stuff.

Has anyone mentioned 'Would?' yet?

The bassline start to that song made me seek out what it was and got me into AIC from there. I have a bootleg of when they did Glasgow Barrowlands somewhere too. That's pretty good for live stuff.

I liked it all TBH, although, I find, like listening to too much Soundgarden, I get a headache after and hour or two!
