When my wife unlocks her Samsung s8 she sometimes gets ads appearing, bit of an inconvenience sometimes and a right royal pain in the arse when it's one of those "you can close this ad in..." She isn't sure but it often happens when Whatsapp is open. Being an Apple fan* I'm not familiar with Android. Is this a common occurance and is there anything I can check?

Never had adds so I suspect it's an app running in the background. Had all the 'S' series in this house.
I've had similar when my router was hacked?
Is it when on WiFi or data or both?
There are many options in the Playstore to block ads on Samsung devices.
Samsung S10 here and no issues with ads.
be an app doing that, my dad was terrible at clicking on all sorts of shite, i frequenty had to cleanse his phone to stop ads/pop ups
Several Samsung phones in this parish (S8's & S10's)& no ads like this. Definitely not normal.
I'd also suggest checking the apps installed, I'll bet one of them is chucking out in adverts.
(S10e and A40 here, with older models before)
