So, MrsMC is no longer keen on the planned camping trip to spend a couple of days at the Games and then a couple more in Edinburgh, and is looking at alternatives.

The budget hotels are all booked out across the central belt, lodges and cottages are either full or extortionate, any other suggestions for locations that might leave us 60-90 minutes from either city and not involve selling a child or a kidney?

Sorry, posted and then went to work

Yes, we will have a car, though we are assuming public transport will be sorted to get to the games venues.....

Try Troon or prestwick bed and breakfasts. Nice enough towns and 45 mins from the city centre by train, 35 by car.

North Glasgow is usually a good call for transport. Bearsden, kirkintilloch, killearn, maybe try strathblane country hotel

Helensburgh - 35 minutes on the train, then 10 on the bike? Loads of bike routes put in just for the games.

Try the Crowwood Hotel(near the M80), looks to be £100 for a family room. Alternatively look at places along the M8 corridor that have rail links too Glasgow, I stay in Bathgate and there a few Hotels here, Premier Inn, The Cairn and The Kaim Park all pretty decent and if you drive Glasgow East End is about 40 minutes away!
