Now then, way back when (2003 or so)..... I used to edit video stuff on the first 'DV' G3 imacs (the first ones with firewire I think) - and probably on version 2 or 3 of iMovie. They had a curious little glitch (which I'm not sure was either a feature/limitation of the hardware, the system system software or the programme), which was when you slowed a clip down instead of the sound slowing and going deeper in pitch the sound would be fractured into lots of little fragments, so that it would be slower, but at the same pitch.

Does that way of processing sound have a name? I'd like to use sound like that again with out having to drive down to Oxford to pick up the old mac!

Hello!

It sounds like it's doing some tempo shifting using granular synthesis. Depending on your knowledge in the area this may make a little heavy reading, but a google search on granular synthesis should bring up what you need.

I guess this is 'time stretching'. Do you want your audio to sound fractured/glitchy or just be able to change length of clip but retain pitch?
If it's the latter then I would think most video editing would have this function (I'm only really familiar with Adobe Premiere), as do audio editors and sequencers.

If it's glitch you're after then is it something like this maybe:

(not suggesting you go out and buy Logic, just an example)

This thread might be helpful to you too:

Blimey - cheers for the replies - fractured/ glitchy is the feel. I'll check those links out and see where they lead me
