I'm after for some ideas before I sit down with the maps and a beer tonight. Off road mountain biking. Anywhere in Scotland. 1 night,2 days riding. Preferably a circular route or if it's an A to B then some means of getting back to the car.

Have a look at the Cairngorm Loop. Pick the bit that takes your (three possibilities, all 'circular').

Be careful of conditions though as a) snow can linger in the Gorms and b) it can get pretty boggy in places if pishes too.

When are you planning to do this? As MH suggests, it's very weather dependant.

If its estate road riding type of thing I have a few routes of varying lengths for wandering thru the scenery. HOw many miles a day? For me its as much about getting to places like this as it is about techy riding so if thats your bag I'll work out some more detail of the routes I have used.

I don't know how you managed to fit so many folk into that wee tent.

What time of year? Capital Trail is 240km circular route starting at Portobello Beach, Edinburgh - has a nice variety of terrain and scenery. Markus who devised the route is also working on some variations

You might get some ideas here ; http://www.blog.scotroutes.com

Affric-Kintail Way from Inverness and train back from Kyle.

Glen Kinglass from Tyndrum an train back from Taynuilt.

Thinking May till October time. I would like some technical single track in there, so that would curtail my mileage to around 30 offroad miles (not counting forest roads etc as off-road) a day which I would say is well within my fitness levels.

Maybe the inner loop of the Cairngorms Loop http://www.cairngormsloop.net/map.html which is basically Aviemore to Braemar and back. I wouldn't say it's all singletrack but it mostly is. A lot of the rest of the route is estate tracks though the initial section north from the A9 through the Gaick is also singletrack.

Of course two days' hammering it would get you a long distance, like 400Km if you were on the HT550, so what constitutes a day's riding is quite variable.

I've been looking at a loop in the Fannaichs and Fisherfield, some estate tracks, some single track and some hike-a-bike, oh, and that river crossing. The only problem is that to close the loop there's a nineteen mile road section 🙄
