Hi all,

I have a XTR M952 chainset that I would still like to use, but the BB is no longer an available item.

Can anybody tell me if any currently available BB's are compatable? I seem to remember hearing that a Shimano road octalink BB of some description will fit?

Cheers, Maurice.

I think the Durace one fits, bit the splines are shorter

113mm or 108mm octalink is the same I think. What length is your current one?

You want either a BB-es70/71 or BB-es50/51 ideally.

The road octalink spline pattern matches (e.g. dura ace, ultegra, 105). But the lengths available are different so you may need to do some measuring/experimentation to see if they would be viable.

Summary of spline patterns and length options here : http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_n-o.html#octalink

The XTR BBs still sometimes pop up on ebay, but less frequently these days and sometimes a bit pricy.

I need a new BB for this crank too. The Sheldon Brown site says that the crank accepts the V1 version of the octalink but the ES 70/71 and 50/51 are V2. However, when I measure the splines on the crank they are 9 mm, which is the length of the V2 splines. Have you used one of these BBs successfully on the XTR?

BB-ES brackets don't work with 952 cranks. The length of the spline may be ok but the width of the spline is different.
