I have some profile cranks, bought a second hand ti axle. The thread is slightly damaged and I want to recover the thread, I have got a tap plug with no flut on it and I am a bit dubious of using it, as it seems to want to take too much material away. I think I need a fluted tap but I'm not sure whether I need a flute taper tap, a flut second tap or a flute plug tap. So engineers which is best for repairing a thread?
All taps are usually fluted unless it's a roll tap, which are only used for certain materials.
To repair a thread i would recommend a 2nd lead tap
Edit:
3/4UNF is 16tpi not 24tpi, you may be able to get a 3/4x24UNS tap but will be more expensive than a standard 3/4UNF
you can because I have one, only its not fluted, looked on the cromwells website and they do have a fluted 3/4 24 unf second tap.
What thread?
pedal threads are 9/16" x 20tpi or 1/2" x 20tpi BSC
No its the thread for the axle bolts. Bought the axle second hand and the third anf fourth(ish) threads are slightly damaged.
