What do folks recommend for ring protection when you don't need chain retention?

I've found a few options and they'd all probably do the job. Not sure what the need for the elongated holes is, seems they would let the guard rotate on impact. Maybe they're hangovers from the retention variants needing to be adjustable.

The new Unite one is a bit different to the others. It's one piece metal, round holes. Looks a bit narrower, no replaceable skid or shock absorption, not sure if any of that matters. But it's nice in the anodised colours.

E*Thirteen TRS Plus Bash-Only
Funn Zippa
MRP XCg 2-bolt
OneUp Underbash
Unite Compact V2

I forget which one I run. I think E13.
The oval holes allow you to position the guard where you want it depending on frame geometry(ISGC tab location vs frame curvature).
Mine has not rotated, but I don’t hit it hard either. So I don’t need replacble parts either. I only run a 28t chairing and matching taco, so it sits fairly high off the ground, mostly gets hit riding over logs/rocks, not smashing it into stuff at speed.

If you run a 34t ring, you might want to have something more smooth or replaceable, as you might hit it more, and harder.

Why does frame curvature come into it? The ISCG tabs I believe are a standard position relative to the shaft of the bottom bracket, which the chainring is also centered on. I don't currently see why any adjustment is necessary.

It ought to be, but it isn't necessarily. And frames will sit a little differently depending on fork length, sag, that sort of thing. Basically it's smart for manufacturers to allow adjustability even on a bottom-only guide.

I’ve had the MRP on a couple of bikes and just fitted the oneup to another.

Most unnoticed part I have on the bike. They sit there, waiting for you to **** them off rocks, then stop the rock from hitting your chainring when you do. Fit and forget.

I've ordered a Unite one.
Was going to get the full v1 but as NW rings & clutches seem to do the job, I got just the bash.

I'm a bit sceptical of it being just metal but it's had decent feedback already and is a bit cheaper than the others + made in Wales.

I've got the Funn one as (i think) it was the cheapest at the time. It's something I've hardly noticed most of the time, apart from one big rock scrape where I went "Ooh, that would have bent some teeth..." then remembered I had a bash guard on.
It also came with two of the actual plastic plates, so if I eventually tear one to pieces I can just swap the plastic bit out.

That's the good thing about the oneup, it comes with 3 plastic bits to cover all chainring sizes, up to 38t I think.

I have the oneup bash with the upper guide which hasn't got a mark on it so probably don't need. The bash plate took one hell of a whack recently, I looked down expecting the worst but it was still straight, I think the thicker plastic guard handles impact better and helps it slide over stuff, plus I've got a spare plate.
I like the look of the unite one though I don't think it would've come out unscathed from my last impact.

Kamakazie how are you finding the Unite?

Looks cool, colour choice, good price, made in Wales.

The Funn one however is adjustable, includes a spare skid of the same size, and being plastic and wider probably slides and absorbs impact better, not much more expensive.

I've got the Funn zippa on both of my bikes.
Does the job and as previously mentioned comes with a spare, and was also the cheapest at the time.

I’ve got the Oneup bash guide on both bikes - so the bash bit and a top guide too. Having looked at it it’s taken quite a lot of impacts but it’s still in good shape and the chainring hasn’t had to bear the brunt of those. I seem to have spare guards in the bag for each guide still and spare top guides too. I can’t say I’ve ever noticed the guide / bash have ever rotated either.

I had an E13 one (albeit with a top guide too) where I couldn’t actually make it fit a frame as the metal parts fouled the chainstay. I’d imagine that’s why they make them rotatable to clear stuff like that on some frames.

Most of those linked look decent - although I think I’d avoid the Unite one as it’s pure metal. The ones with a replaceable plastic section look like they’d slide off stuff rather than catch / gouge.

IME running a single ring negates the requirement for a bash guard.

https://absoluteblack.cc/taco-bashguard/ is one option.

And yes bash guards are still useful if you ride rocky locations or ride lots of log crossings without having world class bunny hop skills.

Rode the 96 miles of WHW on saturday, and that's a shit load of rocky riding and drainage ditches. My chain battered a fair few things, but the chain protects the ring, there ain't a mark on it.

I've seen ride ending damage to chains caused by rock strikes, along with bent rings. Always run one of I can, the last one I had showed signs it had taken some significant bashes.

Not used it yet as my frame has had to go back for an issue.

A rock strike bent the chainring and spider on my SLX cranks, a bash taco might of saved them. Fairly good going on a hardtail. Shame it was during the Sam Houghton Challenge, still once I'd bent the teeth back on the chainring I was ok to finish the event.
