[Closed] whats wrong with my superstar pads

Been running some of the early superstar pads, ( although only just fitted and unused). They would not bed in at all. Run them at swinley and applied some sand etc and still no good. Roughened them up with some sandpaper, started working nicely. Next ride bite has gone again.

Rotors are true and good and have been cleaned with MTB disk brake cleaner. Brakes are working fine.

Fitted another pair from the batch to another bike and they are spot on.However they did not bed in until i started riding and braking on a DH course. Then all was well.

I couldnt get the kevlar ones to bed in very well, seemed to glaze over continually. Went back to sintered and all is fine.

Is it muc off cleaner? Had the same symptoms if so. Stopped using it and all is good now.

I used to take the pads out before a ride and rub them on the pavement to try and get some bite back in them.

As Steve said.
The answer to your question is in the title.

They are Superstar pads.

That's what's wrong with them.

Have you thought about emailing Neil at Superstar? Then perhaps you could post the reply up here. 😈

I've never had any issues with SS pads sent them back and you'll get a new set I'm sure.

I'm really liking the kevlar ones seem to last really well and have excellent bite.

your not doing what i did a few years ago are you.....

had the same problems, and turns out it was down to me being stupid and using car shampoo to wash my new bike with. Yep car shapmoo with added wax 😳 Although in my defence the label had fallen of the bottle so didnt know this at first!

I've always used car shampoo (Turtle Wax) and never had a problem with my Shimano pads, maybe its just a SS problem.

I had a problem getting the Kevlar pads to bed in on my wife's bike. My LBS did the usual riding around and braking routine but used hot water, fresh out of the kettle instead of cold and it worked a treat. May be worth a try. The still squeal like hell though.

I've had no issues with SS pads ever. Using their sintered and kevlar ones. No issues at all.
They DID have issues with a crappy batch about 3-4 years ago where the friction material fell off the backing plates.
The only current issues Im aware of these days is the backing plates can be a bit large in some brakes, requiring a bit of filing IIRC, Juicys spring to mind.

Been using SS sintered for a few yrs now with no probs. Used a new set over the w/e in the polaris 7hrs of rain day1 and 5hrs d2. Most people were on metal end of d1, mine were about 25% down and did some mega decents. Dont worry SS are great value, but work just aswell if not better than the other big makes.......

SS pads always been fine for me. Have you cleaned your rotors with IPA? Works a treat. I wouldn't spray muc off or anything apart from water or IPA onto your rotors.

Just when you thought the interwebz had run out of pikchers.

And despite the pic, I run SS pads and have been lucky enough to have never had any problems - I do buy the posh ones though....

Been using them for years as do loads of us in our club, (The Woollybacks) never had any issues with the pads at all, on a group order at £5.35 a pair for sintered you'd be mad or daft to pay more in my opinion.

I had a couple of sintered pairs some years ago that wore to nothing in record time, but then they changed the pad compound and they've been fine ever since. No complaints here.

thanks for the replies. No car shampoo used. No muc off used. Disks cleaned with MTB disk cleaner. Not contaminated. Batch is probably 2-3 years old, has been stored in the dry. Pads seem to glaze over. Out of the three sets I've worked though, this is the second to do this. They just glaze over and loose all bite. they may have improved since this batch. strangley apart from squeeling on e set work really well.

@juiced +1 here too, bled the brakes, disk cleaner etc. On taking the pads out they seem glazed over, never had this problem before.

@ shinythings

ok so you've got a broken bone in your arm but you could have saved a good £8.00 or more over a year.

fair trade off.

wish these haterz would just back off.

Tried the organic ones but they were made of cheese.
Tried the sintered but they felt awfull and squealed like a pig on fire.
Tried the Kevlar ones and they are great - last ages - good bite and reasonably priced.

(in fairness to the organic ones it's a tad sandy round here so they probably wouldn't get much chance)
