the XT one (UN73?) may or may not be better, no idea where you can get one from though.

I could only get hold of the UN54 when I looked - not cool anymore so nobody makes them.

UN54 is the only one sold as new stock now (or UN26)

UN72 new old stock is the holy grail IMO 🙂 I have a small collection of them harvested from friends and eBay (Malaysia!).

UN54 is probably perfectly good for longevity and certainly going to be good value for money.

I'm not sure the UN73 is any better.

I was looking at this earlier in the week and concluded that the UN54 has the same bearings of as an old UN73, and has plastic cups to save weight.
Not if it has a hollow spindle though.

I've been running a UN54 for a year now with no problems (while absolutely stuffing just about every other bearing on my bike in that time)

If you still insist, Spa Cycles had some UN73s in stock earlier this week.

(I once got 40,000 touring miles out of a UN72!)

Only real downside of the UN54 over the UN72/73 to me is the use of the plastic cup on the non-drive side...just got to be careful not to overly tighten it. Aside that, my UN54 is still running solid through 2 muddy winters.
