And I am on the right forum. Not looking for obvious tales of: i didn't have a condom so she said 'you're not putting that thing anywhere near me'

I was meant to be riding in the lakes tomorrow, dependent on successfully fitting a new bottom bracket, new cranks, new pedals and new back wheel bearings (all the stuff that's been progressively on its way out over the winter)

After an hour or two in the kitchen with a beer and five live (aaaaaah the joy of no longer being married) Its all pretty much done. Mission accomplished apart from.... apart from...

Wheres my 8mm allen key? I had one. It should be with the rest of them. Ah yes. I remember. I put it in my courier bag due to my singlespeed cranks constantly loosening up on my way to work. Wheres my courier bag? Presently, its 30 miles away.

And its half nine on a saturday night so everyones out and i can't borrow one

So....

a) what simple little thing has spoiled your fun
and
b) can anyone tell me how how to bodge this so i can check everythings functioning properly before i ride in the morning. Cheers

Have you got a 6mm and a 2mm? Or a 5mm and a 3mm? As long as they add up to 8mm you can stick 'em together to do the job of an 8mm.

5/16th allen key will work if you have access to an imperial set

Q1; given you need an 8mm allen key I'm assuming they're Octalink or sq taper cranks.

Is there not one on your multitool? Or the old multitool that you never use that's in the spares drawer?

Failing all. Bodge it as best you can with a rubber mallet to get the crank on as far as you can, then fit the bolt with loctite so it won't come out, and then cadge one in the car park tomorrow. Or off anyone else riding that you pass. I've got one in my pack so I'm sure others have them too.

cadge one in the car park tomorrow

or where and when is the start - i.e. are you anywhere near a local bike emporium at a convenient time?

about 3 hrs ago, settling into second glass of wine and looking forward to an early morning ride in some glorious sunshine.......notice house getting a bit cold, have a look, see that circulating pump has stopped - give it a 'tiny' tap with a screwdriver, it starts again....yeah....half an hour later it's stopped and water is pissing out the valve joints.....40 mins of fannying around with towels and plastic tubs while the system drains down....call Scottish Gas and they are sending a guy in the morning to replace pump and fix valve (the benefits of monthly care plans, but still ****s up that ride....)

however......plan B is a late morning family outing.............to Drumlanrig 😛

Yesterday - decided to ride the Meta, but oh, pedals are on the other bike - swapped them. Then tried to fit the rear wheel - rotor binding badly. Remembered that last time I rode it (Afan in Feb) wore through the pads so it's a an unused set - and the pistons won't go back far enough into the caliper no matter what I try. So, decided to bleed them. The hose needed shortening anyway. After the bleed there was too much play in the lever. Took a while to suss that I should have bled them with the pad contact wound out... Yada yada yada. and so the day passed without riding. 😥
