Small fiat (11mth old) is becoming intolerant of his buggy, but he's quite taken with his mate's tricycle which has clutches to disengage the pedals and handlebars. I've seen quite a few around, but they all seem a bit flimsy with wobbly handles and questionable construction. One I saw in Smythes looked like it was designed by apollo's apprentice tea maker. Are there any good or less bad ones?

Micromtbfixlette had a smart trike from mothercare. It had a variety of things to take a proper tiny tot that could all be removed to turn it into a pedal trike. It never got any use with pedals as she moved on to a balance bike but it was the preferred option to the pram for a while.

Most trikes are rubbish as the pedals are too far in front of the saddle (attached to the from wheel) to be useful and that is compounded by the fact they turn with the handlebars. One with a chain and a separate crank if you can find one, or a push along if not IMHO.

We got one of these for our first. Unfortunately just as we got it, he decided to make the leap to his balance bike. #2 though (now 18 months) loves being pushed around on it. Detachable handle for pushing/directing them and its got freewheel pedals etc. Really nicely built thing too. We ordered one from Mothercare and it was dangerous - turned the handlebars and the whole thing became very unsteady and tipped over. Took it back, played hell and I think they actually removed it from sale!

I bought my daughter (when she was about 9 months) a chillafish bunzi which she loved, and continued to use until she was big enough to use a balance bike properly. It converts from trike to balance bike very easily when the kid is old enough.
