My tube of Shimano grease finally ran out so I've started using the tub of Castrol LM that I've had for probably 20 years and barely made a dent in it. It's messy to use, so I ordered the STW approved Dualco mini grease gun.

Before I fill the grease gun up with LM, is there any significant difference with other greases to make it worth the hassle? Old threads brought up by searching suggest some advantages to marine greases maybe.

It's for general bottom bracket, wheel, headset bearings etc by the way.

Thanks !

Having just read some of the older threads it's clear that life it too short and LM looks as good as anything, as I've already got another 20+yrs ish worth of it left it then it's going in.

What I did learn though is that the hole in the middle of the plastic "sliding" top in the grease tub is meant to have a cartridge / dispenser placed over the top of it and then pressed down, so filling the dispenser nicely, so saving the messy spooning is out business. Will give that a go !

I’ve used Silkolene previously, good stuff but am about to order some supposedly more water resistant mobile XHP 222 on the strength of an old thread

If I was buying grease, I'd get something more waterproof- XHP222 gets massively recommended, Rockoil MPG works well for me though it's a little less sticky.

But if I already had LM I'd use that.

In order to make life as hard for myself as possible I changed my mind and ordered a tube of XHP222 after filling the grease gun.

To save the Googling can you post links to the gun and the XHP please.

Links to the bits I ordered below. They're "commodities" so available via other sources - the grease itself is available for close to half the price if you order several tubes...

Grease gun
Dualco Mini Grease Gun via eBay
No idea why the image on ebay has "I.D. Cambridge England" on it. The one I received is plain and has "Dualco.

XHP 222 Grease
XHP22 from Opie Oils via eBay

OP, I'm being thick here, can you explain this bit please ta?

Belray grease for me. Bought for my KTM head and pivot bearings. Kept them in pretty good nic so should be good enough for a bicycle.

When you unscrew the lid of the grease tub there is often a plastic “cover” on top of the grease itself with a hole in the middle. You press the cover down and grease comes out of the middle. Keeps contaminants out of the grease.

If you’re intending to transfer the grease into a grease gun you can put the barrel of the grease gun over that hole and press - grease is then dispensed directly into the barrel.

I didn't know that. And I have been working on cars and bikes for a long time. Always wondered why there was a hole in the middle.

4 tubes for £20 here / plus postage but still works out at £6 a tube.

The dualco grease gun is available cheaper from bikegoo and I recently opted for a 500g tub of XHP222 from an eBay seller as worked out better value than buying the cartridges.

Was that from Opie Mark or somewhere else?

Cheers Dave.

If you don't want to buy bulk, I bought this one , better value may be available elsewhere.

I use something like  these  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/362803099742 and re-fill the syringes. It's really handy for getting smaller quantities of the grease in tighter spaces eg headset bearings or around wheel bearings. A joy to use.

I have nearly finished my 30+ yr Castrol LM and have been using the Mobil and the Silkoline. The Mobil is slightly stickier and smellier (harder to get off yr hands) than the Silkoline. The LM is used up on mates bikes 😁.

Definitely easier to load the syringes from a tub, so will probably go with Silkoline again.

Sorry, I missed the link from my post above. This is a specific viscosity if NLGI 2. No idea what the standard stuff is or what the optimal is...

eBay linky

Cheers. I bought ten tubes off the same seller. Apparently the packaging got damaged & the courier wouldn't deliver. Dwayne Hicks was very quick to refund my money. Did you receive yours?
