Hello,
Looking at a new waterproof for shite weather riding.

Have seen the RaceFace Chute and Madison Addict as possibilities? Anyone got either?

Criteria is it has to keep most of the water out and not make me melt on a climb. I know there is no perfect option but hit me with any suggestions. Ideally can take a crash or two also. I have a lightweight packable thing for summer showers but it isn't really waterproof.

Cheers

Get yourself a Paramo. For cold weather riding there's nothing better IMO (although I wear mine for 9 months of the year). Warm, completely breathable, keeps out all manner of deluges as long as reproofed once in a while.

Since I've been wearing Paramo I've not even looked at a shell jacket. Even the best ones are still boil in thr bag and prone to tearing in the event of a crash.

Which Paramo do you recommend Loddrik?

recent really impressed by the new Endura* range, all seemed to have pitzips, forget spending stupid money on fancy material that 'breath', pitzips are a much better answer.

.
.
*not that those endura were cheap cheap cheap

I use a Cuzco although they aren't available anymore. It's the jacket version of the Velez. If I were buying another now I'd go for a Quito or maybe a Velez or Velez Adventure.

I got an Addict last winter. great coat, very waterproof. and big detachable hood for over-helmet duties. I got mine for £80 at the time from here.

Looks theyre £90 at the mo. The orangey red colour is great - very hi vis.

Zippy - you might enjoy this:

a nugget:

Like thirst, sweat is an important signal, but we’ve been educated to view it as a nuisance and led to believe we can engineer it out of the equation when most of the time we just need to take some clothes off.

Why the Roam over the Addict? Roam doesn't look like it has pit vents?

Paramo Quito looks good but pretty pricey for crashing in.

I'll have a look at Endura stuff.

Any more options?

If you're worried about crashing, Paramo stuff can generally be repaired. Not the greatest looking perhaps and can be warm, but quiet (don't rustle), washable and breathable.

I use a Marmot Precip - £70 from Go Outdoors. Waterproof, not breathable in the manner of GoreTex/eVent but the pit zips are big enough to help massively with ventilation.

The fit is good for me and the jacket will go over soft armour without any trouble (I wear a One Industries top with elbow and shoulder pads built in).

No idea on how it would stand up to crash damage but I'd still happily recommend the Precip.

This link might prove helpful.

no idea how it performs but tried on a Gore Power Trail GT AS Jacket the other week, felt very nice, good quality and light, going off the brand id expect it to be the bollocks, looks great too.

I don't plan on crashing in it. I'm just prepared to accept the possiblity that it might happen.

The 2013 Altura Attack that I bought last year for not many quids has been one of the best jackets I've owned

I had a Raceface Chute. It was crap. Odd shape, and I sweated so much in it it, I may as well not have bothered to wear a jacket, it was running out of the bottom - and i'm not a sweaty person!

I have a Scott Vikos now, that seems great by comparison. Decently waterproof yet I don't seem to feel like i'm in a sauna.

I got it abroad though, having a look here, it's bloody expensive.

I am selling an Altura Attack in blue small if it's of interest? Too big for me or I would keep it, it is freshly washed and re-proofed, though only worn about a dozen times, never crashed no rips or abrasions.

Now have a (better fit) ladies raceface and though it fits betterits not as breathable, the altura was like a sail on me though as I lost weight! 🙂

Cheers, but will be too small.

Any thoughts on the Madison Zenith? Looks like a decent jacket with vent zips. No hood though but I think I can live with that for the price saving over the addict.

EDIT: Just saw a comparison with the Roam from the other thread. It sounds like it might be a good bet. Unsure if the other thread was comparing the Zenith Softshell or the Zenith waterproof which are different I think.

Just bought one of these http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/berghaus-mens-stormcloud-jacket-p324964.

Not worn yet but for the price, if it does what it says it does it should be good.

Not bike specific, but a Rab Vapour Rise Lite has been my go-to biking jacket for the last three years or so. I've tested the crash resistance several times (not intentionally) and it's still going strong. Nice quiet material and decently lined so it's not unpleasant against the skin if you're using it as a summer jacket with short sleeves underneath. Layer it up with a long sleeve base layer and a long sleeve jersey and it's plenty warm enough for me on all but the coldest of days. Chest pockets double up as effective vents if required. It seems to be in a similar ballpark to the jackets mentioned in the original post, but if you can put up with last years' colours - and they're generally not offensive - there's usually a few bargains to be had
