Dunno if this has been covered before but here goes...
I omitted to wear my waterproof shorts over my longs this morning and suffered for it. Windchill was really bad and my gentlmanly regions were very painful by the time I got to work, will certainly be back to over shorts tomorrow, the question is, how do roadies cope? You can get longs with fleecy knees but not fleecy crotches. So how do roadies manage their manhoods temperature and prevent crotch cryogenics? I assume its not just me that suffers from this, its the very extremeties that suffer so I'd guess members of certain religions (and adult movie entertainers) won't have this problem. In the past I've employed a wooly sock for warming duties but that didn't work too well and riding along with one hand clamped over your crotch Jacko stylee is dangerous.
I apologise if I've strayed into the realms of too much information - if I haven't I've no doubt someone will be along shortly - but I feel this is a problem that should be [s]tackled[/s] broached.
i asked this t'other week.
merino undercrackers.
or you can get akla ones with a pertex front.
Winstopper bib tights (or alternative versions with different trademarks).
just tuck it into your socks
Was waiting for something similar SFB and I'm not surprised it was you ๐
Windstopper sounds about right but the rest of me's warm enough so may be overkill.
Tescos bag.
Padded shorts of the normal cycling variety seem to do the trick nicely. On the occasions I've commuted in regular undies in the winter I have suffered exactly the same problem a you: I understand your pain!
A number one when you get to work brings double the relief though ๐
walm up balm liberally applied
Was waiting for something similar SFB and I'm not surprised it was you
actually I find in such circumstances it shrinks so much it's hard to find it :o)
Wrap it in foil.
not in my experience, fortunatley we got nice hot showers at work.Padded shorts of the normal cycling variety seem to do the trick nicely
Seriously? (!)Wrap it in foil.
Go for longs without a liner and wear over shorts.
I do remember the very old longs with inserts weren't warm and riding home along the A40 with my hand down my longs.
You shouldn't have any problems at all with pukka longs or a longs/shorts combo.
@Donk
Roubaix longs should be Roubaix all over, not just the knees.
Well I was wearing roubaix longs fine for 90% of winter but obviously not good enough for the really bad wind chill we occasionally get about this time of year. You shouldn't have any problems at all with pukka longs or a longs/shorts combo.
Edit yep these ones are roubaix all over.
I Always use a lycra cycling short under my longs anyway. Never had cold plumbs.
I double up my lycra cycling shorts...
I always use shorts too, assumed that was the norm, do some people just wear longs net to the skin then? Windchill is worse on the road lowey not that you'd know ๐
Thought about doubling up GL but 2 padded shorts would cause bunching wouldn't it?
Something like this

Though I've only ever worried when below about -10. Decent roubaix longs and another pair of regular shorts under them is all I've ever used in the UK. Though my merino baselayer is quite long and I will at times tuck that down around the package...
Get your wide to knit you a willy warmer!
Been road riding down to -6 or so and never had a problem with Roubaix tights over normal lycra shorts. Maybe you have trouble getting blood to your old chap? ๐
Feet, on the - er - other hand. Can never keep them warm no matter what I try.
I wear tracksuit bottoms (shiny 100% polyester ones with 100% polyester lining, avoid ones with cotton lining). Wear em over your shorts / underwear. Toasty warm, very quick drying, cost a fiver. Okay they are not fancy and aerodynamic, but that makes next to no difference on a commute.
Joe
deep heat?
failing that, i find Endura Stealth Extreem tights pretty good for keeping big Jim and twins happy.
Can't say I've ever noticed a problem wearing normal padded shorts under fleecy bib tights. However one thing which might help is a pair of Helly Windbriefs - I've found they work well at preventing this problem when running or skiing.
Maybe you have trouble getting blood to your old chap
Viagra?
Another vote for unpadded tights over padded bib shorts.
I went running at the weekend and in the absence of lycra, and having suffered before, I opted to include a 'trainer' sock (one of those socks without a big ankle bit) in my attire. It worked a treat ๐
Failing that, hope that said bodypart gets cold enough that it heads up inside, thus keeping itself warm?
Those windbriefs look....well they look a bit pants really but might be just the ticket for warming my cockles. Not putting deep heat anywhere near that area thankyou. Sounds like most don't have this trouble. I've never noticed it offroad just on early morning road commutes and only a few each winter.
try loosening off the straps a little, if you stuff too much in there you will be cold even with extra warm socks, you need room to wiggle about.

Just apply Deep Heat pre-ride.
I've employed a wooly sock for warming duties
Funniest thing I've read on here for ages!
Old style Endura MT500 lycra shorts are toasty under tights or under waterproof trousers.
I have a thick thatch of hair that keeps mine warm.
This thread is useless without pics!!
heated arab strap?
