If you were building the ultimate trail bike, what would be your fame of choice and why?

I'd be split between a 5 and a Heckler.

I'll get started. I'll say a Cotic BFe because of the supposed good handling, heftiness and ability to handle any length fork I'd realistically need in the UK.

I love my heckler - when it comes time for a new bike I'll get another one ?

A Cotic Bfe, I have one and its the ultimate. But if it were to be a full suspension bike, then it would have to be a short travel, superfast full susser like a Commencal Super 4, or a Pivot Mach 4, they look awesome.

Ahhh, it has to be full suspension, and money no object. I kind of missed out these important details.

What's a trail bike?

Oh, and my Mojo HD140, anyway. It's got all bases covered.

I found the angles on my heckler a bit steep for the amount of travel, when the trails got steep I felt too on top of it, a heckler with a couple of degrees slacker head angle would be perfect for me. I don't know which bike that would be, but I have always liked the look of the nicolai's if the angles matched my likes it would be my first choice.

Theres nothing steep round my way so it I don't need a slack bike, tends to take the fun out of it slightly anyway. I'm looking for something for tight twisty singletrack, and the odd weekend away to somewhere with hills, and all day epics.

I.thought you'd settled on a [s]Five[/s] [s]Tracer[/s] [s]Blur[/s] Blur LTc?

Have you demoe'd any of the above?

I own a Five.

The Tracer is out the window, I don't need that much travel or weight to carry round.

Blur LTc is a possibility, so is the TRc.

Not demoed either yet. Need some more bikes to add to the list first.

I like the Five, it rides well, just becoming a bit common thats all.

Plus my brother just bought one, which makes it extra less special (or him more special)

I fancy something different, something in the superbike category.

That'll be a five then 🙂

Five & Heckler, repeat 10 times.

It's not been done yet. I'm yet to ride a sus system which I would consider perfect, I'd like the performance of knollys 4xfour downhill and DW link on the ups in a stiff strong and light carbon package like LTc or carbine. I think it's actually impossible.

If I ever get the funds the replacement for my current one will be one of SC Bullit, Orange Patriot, Pivot Mach 5.7 or Yeti ASR-7. Veering towards Yeti but the only one those I have tried was the Patriot, very good. Also loved the similar Sub-5 (does that date me?) but hated the also similar Sub-3, mainly due to lack of ground clearence.

I had a Heckler and have to agree that for smiles per mile it is one of the best trail bikes out there.

Got a Mojo SL after I cracked the down tube, and find the mojo better on single track and descending and pretty similar climbing (built the Heckler light to 28 lbs and the Ibis is in a heavier build at 28 lbs!) Mojo is I'm afraid way better and far more capable than me 🙂 - it is also twice the price for the frame.......

Aren't they about a 67/68 degree head angle? imo that's about spot on, my Bullit has that and it feels just right for anything I've ridden so far. Any slacker and it'd feel like a barge.

I have all the parts and there is no way I would pay 3k for a Trek frame

Yeah basically.

Feel livelier than my Five on the single track which is what I want, thats why I was thinking Blur LTc.

the future is carbon full sussers, with about 140-160 travel, as in Mojo HD140/160, with 28 lb builds and dropper posts. Maybe even lighter with 1x10 and carbon rims.

I love my BFe but that's the way I see it going.

There's a lot of bike pron out there that I'd love to own, but my own experiences are somewhat limited.

Despite the fact that my '09 Wolf Ridge is an absolute bloody hoot, my old Enduro is acceptably stiff, can be ridden for hours without tiring me out and still amazes me each and every time I ride it.

Now I've stopped trying to make the Enduro the bike for all occasions and have simply installed sensible components on it (aside from the 710mm bars), it's become the bike I always wanted it to be. It's taken eight years of trial and error.

I will recommend what I own, obviously (to be fair, that's not just bias, if it wasn't my favourite bike I'd have sold it and got something that was- I've churned hardtails but the Hemlock's been a keeper)

That said, it's not light, so if there's something that could have the same ride character and weigh as much as an ASR5 or something, that'd do me.

SB66 sounds damn good actually, they aslo do a carbon version and it has a perfect ETT length for me......hmmmmmm.

ASR5 sounds good also.

stanton slackline for HT, still looking for a new FS, so will follow 😉

hows you boys with the SB66's find it descending? hearing very mixed reviews, but it looks sooo nice 😛

Slackline for me also. It's the only frame I'd swap my sovereign for.

Full suss it would be the blur trc. If they make an ally version I will get one at some point. Carbon pffft. Overpriced biros.

After many attempts (Turner, Cove, Orange, Marin, cycle craft, cannondale, Nicolai, on one, etc) my ultimate trail bike will soon be a Nicolai Helius AC 29er.... Can't wait !!!

I'm torn at the moment between the machismo of 'All Mountain' burly biking that massages my ego and the less trendy and not so tough more XC end of the trail bike spectrum.

On the downside its burly all the way and on the up side its more XC trail...

I have no experience of trendy boutique bikes this side of the millennium so I see no point in saying a Yeti, Intense, Santa Cruz, Nicolai etc. So I'll go with a Trek EX8 or a Specialized Stumpjumper Evo.

Wouldn't mind a carbon version of my Mondraker Dune, with rear X12 axle, Bos Deville fork, Reverb, XTR and blingy carbon wheels.

Won't lose any sleep over not having one though.

for me it was my ellsworth epiphany silly light, super fast and extremely capable

or

sinister splinter- just plain mental in an encourages you to go waaaay too fast followed by leaving massive skid marks in your shorts and on the trail. Frank makes blinkin amazing bikes, the gruitr looked like a loon as well
