I bought the Stylo team chainset as I can't afford Shimano prices at the moment. I had an old ISIS Stylo chainset some years back and had the same nightmare everyone else had with ISIS. So I thought with the backing of the mighty SRAM, their latest external BB technology should be up to the job.

When I fitted it, I thought, "is that it?" Tightening up one 8mm bolt on the non-drive side seems a flimsy way of securing the chainset and I noticed I couldn't eliminate all play. After half a dozen rides, I still can't get rid of the play and on last night's ride, the BB was creaking really badly.

Do you just put up with the play/creaky BB because the system design is not too good, or have I got a dodgy one?

I have a truative one on my road bike and it has been fine for 2 years. I have never had any play or creaking from it. You don't need any more than the one bolt as it is only hold the crank on and isn't carrying any of the load when you pedal.

I have stylos with GXP. I have just replaced the BB cups after a year and half riding, lots of it muddy. My GXP has been fine. The spacers have to be used as instructed in the install manual/leaflet. There should be no play at all once tightened. Mine a creakless and smooth on a 68mm BB with one spacer on the non drive side.

I've recently installed a Stylo + GXP. Seems good so far (fingers crossed) definitely no play I have a Soul 73mm BB shell and use no spacers. (Ithink)

If you still have any play, undo the 8mm bolt ( it's self extracting) to remove the non driveside arm. Re grease the splines on the axle end, re fit and re-torque the 8mm bolt. It may take a few goes to eliminate all play, as stated in the fitting instructions, this is normal.

Mine was fine straight off and has been for 2 years. IMO it is a far simpler and less faffy method of fitting than Shimano.

Check you are using the correct number of spacers - none for 73mm BB shell, two for 68mm ( I think!).

Ok thanks LenHankie. I've also greased the inside of the bolt face and threads on the non-drive-side arm, because it was a bugger to get off.
