Paul has mailed me to say the mount can be easily modded to give the adjustment needed to take in the sweep of the bars the head mounts to the bracket with 2 bolts so the front hole can be a slot to give the swing .

Cheers Huxley nice beams he has times 6 should be a pretty nice wall of light cant wait for the buggers to arrive now

Update on the housings cnc Paul has been beavering away making my original design even betterer i had it with a flat bottom but he suggested a few fins to aid cooling and also some tweaks which I was thinking about at work and lo and behold the bugger had already implemented them and made some for approval so here they are
this is the Troutelight Engineers cut .

It's a Titanium Luv Handle from Groovycycleworks over in the states. The bar also comes in steel and in whatever colour or design you want. Can really recommend it for people that like long tours and who have had comfort issues with conventional bars and who want something a bit different.

You can read more about them here:

Looking good Trout. Can't wait to get fettling!

I guess the bottom finning will tie people to your mount, rather than using a single bolt Electron style one. If you do go this route I'm assuming you'd lose the thickened area on the bottom 'lid' for drilling and tapping a mount: will gain some extra space inside.

Allthe pies
yep no nut issues

Deew yes we thought in would benifit from a little weight loss and extra fins but does tie it to the mount yes the boss inside has gone

Gohan to save you reading the thread a beer fund donation was made for the add in the classifieds
and also we agreed for me to buy a banner add and stw admin agreed to me putting it on hold for a couple of weeks or so as I did not want any more publicity until this batch is on the trails .

Typing this with bloodshot eyes after getting back from D2D What a night .

Loaned a new light to a guy called Gavin who was teamed up with the DIY ledgend
Robdeanhove you may remember the mega thread a few years ago that started me and a few others light building .

What a nail biting race and with the last laps for the pair to go they were 4th placed and after 2 stonking laps they had captured 3rd so on a test ride for the new light it got on the podium
Might have got higher but for a bent chain problem for Rob on the first lap that lost him about 10 mins

Thanks Gavin and Rob Real nice to meet you both and thanks for giving the light a good thrashing

I was like an expectant dad wondering if it would perform ok

I'd like to add a report on 'real world' testing of Trout's lights this weekend.

Some of you who have been following this thread will recall that Trout was asking for someone who was riding D2D this weekend to test his lights, so I got in touch, as I'm interested in trying out new things, and have dabbled in the past with making my my own home brew lights.

After a bit of bouncing around of ideas, Trout eventually decided to drive down to Thetford, and meet me and my riding buddy, Robdeanhove, of the infamous homebrew LED light fame.

Now, on to the lights themselves!

Trout brought me a daddy Trout and a baby Trout. The daddy mounted very easily on my bars, directly over the stem with the battery being strapped under the stem with a single velcro strap. The baby Trout mounted with a single velcro strap to the top of the helmet. My riding/racing preference is to ride without a pack, so we ended up strapping a battery onto the back of the helmet.

Playing around with the light, I was really impressed with the switches, and how well constructed the lights felt. I've raced with plastic pipe LED-lights, so don't demand aesthetics over function, but these were really cool. I liked the little 'Trout' logo, proposed on here, and also the luminous paint used behind the LED's, so that once you turn them off, the lights glow a cool green. Handy if you drop them, or they get ripped off in a bad crash - but, I just liked how they made people notice you were riding something new and a little different.

During the race, I spent most of the time with the Daddy on 'full', with the Baby on 'low'. This was more than enough light for the tight, twisty trees in Thetford. Switching between 'full' and 'low' is really easy with a nice, positive click on the push switch. The switch has no illumination, but I found it easy enough to find, even in a hurry as I suddenly entered a section of singletrack. With both lights on full, the light levels were astonishing, with a really good coverage of light up to about 50-60 metres out.

I found battery life to be pretty good with the 'standard' batteries (although I have to confess I can't remember their rating) I ran the Daddy on two batteries for 7 laps, and although I noticed a small decrease in its intensity after a couple of laps, the light produced was still well above what I was used to.

The Baby, mounted on my helmet could do with a lighter battery, if you are going to mount it on the helmet in its entirety, otherwise you could easily carry the battery in your pack. After 3 laps, I swapped to my Joystick Maxx, as we didn't have another battery small enough to mount on my helmet. This was instantly noticeable for its much reduced power, in fact, I hardly noticed that it was on, or really felt I needed it with the Daddy doing its business on the bars. The only exception to this was really tight stuff, when being able to 'look' around the corner was necessary. I would say that with a little work on the ergonomics of the battery, the Baby light would be hard to beat for the money.

Trout pointed out that these lights were running on the 'old' LEDs. The new ones he is waiting for, will be 35% brighter and draw less battery power!! Wow!

I would like to pass a huge thanks to Trout and wish him all the best for these lights. In a small way of thanks, we came 3rd in the Male Pairs, and hopefully I provided a useful test of these lights in a 'real world' setting.

Likewise bud, but im fairly patient, so long as it's on the bike before the hour goes forward im cool, plus im sure you'll want to play with the optics first anyway.

I have a good friend who will probably want a night ride with me, she's gonna have to wait until i get my mitts on the troutelight seeing she runs a lupine betty afterall. 😆

Trout, are the logos going under the anodisation (ie already engraved on the ones above) OR are the anodized lights going back to the CNC place so that the logos are exposed Alu?
I know you said the former, but the only pics have been with post anodised etching.

The LL has been an idea I had a long while ago when testing optics on an led which was just fixed to a block of aluminium and I saw that a load of light came out sideways too
now this light is lost inside the case just bouncing around

the optics at best are 90 % effiecient but more likley 80% so I thought by opening up the bottom these caged lumens could get out and shine around the front wheel

hense the Liberated lumens 😀 and the name stuck

You cant beat liberation. ❗

I`ve been on about your light tonight on our regular Tues. night ride....there were some raised eyebrows when i mentioned the 2000+ lumens 😛

There were 23 out tonight, and when i show them how good it is, then there might just be more required!!!!

2200? As I understand it there is an efficiency to factor in (heat production etc) on that figure. Is this correct, or is it 2200 actual output?

Bonesetter

The 2200 lumens is the max rating as quoted by Cree .

just like the 900 lumens quoted for the DX bastid

so yes there will be losses and the output will probably be 80% of the max .

it is just a number and a missleading one at that .
but seeing as all the makers quote the theoretic max I will also .

Tom Mail me in about a week and I will know what I have around

Theoretical but then don't most manufacturers quote that figure? There's loss in the driver but not sure if that's reflected in the max output from the driver being reduced (ie 970ma not 1000ma which means the light output being reduced) or having to put more power in to the driver to get 1000ma out. And the optics won't be 100% efficient so there's a loss. But if you lose 10% that'll leave 1980 lumens. Pah, hardly worth it now is it 😉

EDIT : Doh, beaten by the man .....

Cheers Dave

the driver will send the full 1000ma to the leds the optics are 90 % so lose the 10 % .

but then some of that loss comes out the bottom of the light

Hi Trout, any chance of posting up a better close up pic of the lighter gunmetal housing? Maybe side by side with the original gunmetal that you had which was quite dark? Maybe an idea to do a similar thing with the titanium one too, whoever has that one? Just an idea, as I can't really tell very well from that pic.

P.s. the purple one looks pretty funky!! 🙂

hux You chose Blue

Did i oh right because the email i have here said gunmetal, but if it makes life easier for you then i don't mind blue at all. 🙂

Just don't give me silver or i'll drive up there and kill ye. 😉 😆

Ooooooh i see where the confusion was, you mentioned colour i thought you were on about the text in your email, lmao and you were on about the light, oh dear, just checked back through and i see what happened now.

Ok no biggie blue it is.

Yeah there is a colour in these mails it's blue seeing as you wondered.

Kind of glad in a way, the new gunmetal is too light for my tastes so in a way that slip up kinda paid off.

Should be great seeing how they work, from what i've read it'll be like an xr-e with just as much throw but much better spill and colour rendition and run slightly cooler.

You must be dying to test them out, id be climbing the walls around about now. 😆
