Do people ride the same size as their road bike or do they generally tend to go a bit longer in the top tube?

Mines a bit shorter too. Was fitted out by Paul Hewitt in Preston.

Cheers, is that to give a more upright position? By how much shorter are we talking?

1-2cm for me but not that deliberate. And yes for a more upright position.
It's a personal thing though and a shorter stem & moving the saddle forward can be enough.
An obvious Q is how comfy is your road bike fir all-dayers?

No, its all good, as seen a tourer for sale with the same length top tube as my road bike but as I run quite a long stem on the road bike I reckon the tourer will be fine ๐
