Does anyone have problems getting the gear cables on an 456 adjusted?

Its a full length of outer to both front and back, so do you need to secure it at the cable guides?

I've got problems with it dropping down a gear. Both at the front and back. Is this down to cable flex or do I need to check the length of cable outer? Or secure the outer with zip ties etc to stop movement??

I'm running 1x9, so can only comment on the rear, but it sounds like the outer length might be the issue. I run a SRAM rear mech and simply threaded the outer through the guides and cut it to length with no problems. I'd guess if you're using Shimano gears they could be a little more sensitive to the length of the final loop before the mech. I'd suggest the outer is perhaps a little too short if it has problems going down, but I'm sure there's an expert here on such things who can help.

what do you mean by

I've got problems with it dropping down a gear.
?

I'd suggest: check your outer for kinks or crushes(ooeeerrr), check your ferrules are sitting in the cable guides properly and check that the cuts on the ends of your outers are square and not fraying. (Are your ferrules plastic? If so, bin them for luck.)

456, cables run through guides without being secured, oldish XT shifters with new XT mech= perfect shifting.
