I'm chasing an annoying creak on my frame with a PF92 BB. I'm fairly sure it is the BB as a previous one creaked and the bike went quiet after I swapped the BB (and crank), now the creak is back after only 200km. The new crank is a 24mm Shimano which opens up the option of a thread together PF bb. I've seen ones from token (£45ish) or wheels manufacturing (£100ish). Has anyone any experience with these or other alternatives?
I have a Token on my Basso (pic just because I cleaned it today 😎).
It has been fine. I can persuade the bike to creak occasionally but I have never proven to myself it's actually the BB, I think this time around it was actually the rear QR.
Just be aware that the supplied tool that comes with the Token BBs is almost designed to strip, I think it's made of plastic!
I was planning to use tools I've already got rather than buy one of theirs.
I put a Token thread together PF on my Daughters Downhill bike.
Seems to be doing ok 12 months on.
I put a Wheels Manufacturing one into my gravel bike and that solved the numerous previous BB failures and creakages.
It's been faultless since installation although the stupid tools and lack of grip leeway to install it means it's a 2-person job.
wheels manufacturing ones have been great for me
Put a wheels mfg one on my Orro, a standsrd shimano BB tool worked well, and zero issues or creaks many miles and metres later.
From what i remember useful to have two bb tools so you can seat it from both sides take it slowly and then once it's seated torque it up property
The corollary to all these wonder stories of creak free thread together bbs is I fitted a wheels mfg one as I didn’t like replacing shimano bbs with all the plastic every time they went bad.
Never had a creak before but now with the new bb it can make a noise. I’m suspicious it’s due to bearings directly touching the axle instead of plastic top hats taking up the slop.
It does however spin marvelously if that’s what you’re after
Another Token user, I’ve been running one for years on my gravel bike and it’s been fine, although I can tell the bearings going to want changing this year.
I’d got the version that had lots of adaptors for all the different axles sizes and have had a few different cranks in it.
I had a Hope one on a Turner RFX V4. About the only part in the bike that didn't let me down in the 12 months I had it.
Got a Wheels MFG jobbie on my gravel bike, so far it's a silent as the grave and spins beautifully.
