Hopefully someone can help me out with this one? Got an XT M770 Chainset on an 07 575. Just decided to replace the chainrings and noticed after looking at the Shimano manuals online that there should be a 2.5mm spacer between the BB shell and the BB (which there is). What i need to know is if this spacer should be on the drivetrain side or non-drivetrain side?

Anyone enlighten me?

Gutted! Bike has been set up wrong for 18 months since i bought it then!
They've put it on the non-drivetrain side. No wonder i've always had problems getting it into the small chainring!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks anyway peteimpreza. Means i've got to go out and but a bb tool tomorrow.

It won't really make that much difference tbh.

its only so the chainline is how they designed it to be. you could run it like it is and it wouldn't cause any damage, just a bit trickier to set up the shifting...

I can only get my Motolite's gears running properly with the spacers on the shell the 'wrong' way round for some reason. Wouldn't worry about it, if it works-ish.

I can't seem to get it to drop into the small chainring though, unless i start chainging the rear cogs which obviously is a pain in the ass. Would swapping it over help?

Is it much of a faff to swap over?

Couple of bolts on the LH crank arm, tension cap thingy then the BB cups. 10 minute job.

Can you adjust the lower limit screw on the front mech to let it swing over a little more?

Or am I missing the point...
