Currently running SS with Hollowtech II cranks with a Middleburn SS ring. Want to change to 2 x 9 set up sometime for events, can I just put large and middle ring back on to run as duo or is there spacing "issues" and will a standard sram front mech work ok with 2 rings as opposed to 3?

2 rings will be in the same place asif there were three.

which means that a std mech will work provided you limit the travel using the adjustment screws ( to stop you dropping off the 'middle' ring to the none existent bottom ring.
FWIW you 'can' leave the middleburn ring on, however the gear change will be SLOW as it has no pins & ramps on it.
