Mark it in your diaries!
Meet at 10.00 am to start riding at 10.30 am. Same format as January's one, will be split into ability groups each with leader and sweeper. Meet up at the Cafe at lunch time with more riding in the afternoon for those who are hard enough 🙂
Niche bikes particularly welcome and Swinley is ideal for single speeding.
Adults only and you must have ridden off-road before. I will lead the Slackers group which will consist of a gentle pace, walking up hills, much chattering and crashing 🙄
Huge thanks to those who have volunteered and if anyone else wants to help, please step forward as you will be needed.
For those who haven't been here before, it's single track heaven and is located near Bracknell, Berkshire. Easy access from both M4 and M3. You will need a day permit to ride at a cost of £2.
More details to be posted nearer the time.
So ... who's in?
Could the kind people who volunteered confirm whether they are able to make this date please?
can't do it, i'm in Wales that weekend, missed it again!
I may well pop along for this one as I've been meaning to do the last few STW rides but never got round to it.
I'll confirm nearer the time 😉
I should be alright for that day.
Sounds good to me, I'm looking forward to it.
Should be up for that date - I'll try not to crack another frame this time too!
I can make it 🙂
Looking like a good turnout 8)
I'd be up for coming along, I dont know Swinley as well as I should do.
auric - that was really unlucky for you 🙁
oh yes, me too please.
C_G YGM.
Me me me me me me!!
I might come along for the social side of it.....
🙂
I do want to ride at Swinley with you but I've committed to guiding zokesmonster et al on the Qs that day. Another time.
B*gger, just thought, Mrs MM might have organised at birthday lunch for me that day. Will have to change it to the Saturday 😉 Lunch that is!
I'm free 🙂
Solamanda
You should lead a group for jumps and drops.
Should be ok for this. Adults only? What you got planned C_G?
Ya sounds good for me... leg is getting stronger everyday 😉
😯Adults only? What you got planned C_G?
Count me in too, presuming my knee will be fit enough. What kind of distances are we talking?
Nuts - can't make it - I'll keep my eyes peeled for the next one! How often do these rides happen? I've not noticed them on the forum before...
Baby due a week before so, in the words of them dragons, 'I'm out'
argh damit! - Bordon Enduro is on 1st Nov, forum rides should be on saturdays, switch it to Saturday for a Halloween evening/night ride
Oops, just remembered that sharki's Quantocks nightride is on the previous evening. I may be late and hungover 🙂
Presuming uni work goes well, I'm very much up for this! I'll be in CG's slackers group, hopefully you'll be able to put up with me!
What's the situation with Parking? I've only been to Swinley once before (although it was a nice warm Day in July), and the parking at the Lookout was packed... Are we meeting up at The Lookout, or is there somewhere better?
Why not come down and ride the Borden Enduro as a forum ride. There are categories for all types of rider - fun, beginner, 2hrs, 4hrs pairs, even a frankenbike category 🙂
We're going down this weekend to do a little trail work and video the course but I can guarantee it'll be fast twisty fun singletrack with a few fireroads thrown in to help eating and drinking.
IMO Borden is much more fun that Swinley and only just down the road.
count me in too!
I'll be there.....killers heels n all 😀
no problem with the date or time.
Hi, yep, no probs, I'll be there, are you going for a pre-shufti
OK, shall try and answer the questions.
'Adults only' - this ride isn't suitable for children cos I can't guarantee that everyone will be on their best behaviour. I'm never on mine and when I crash, expletives are guaranteed 🙄
People need to chill out at the weekend and if that involves doing daft things or swearing, so be it. Also Aleigh, bless her, is a screamer and it may unnerve some folk 😯
JamesP - thanks for the invite but I don't race and have no intention of doing so! Many people haven't ridden at Swinley before and this is a good opportunity to be guided by locals.
thisisnotaspoon - the Slackers group will not cover a huge distance. We will ride/chat/faff/session for a couple of hours then head back to the Cafe for lunch. So if you only want to do the morning session, that's fine. Likewise people will have the option of changing groups at lunchtime, ie if they want a faster paced or slower paced group, they will be able to do that.
podman I can put up with anybody! Yes, the car park will be busy but as it's November it won't be as bad as the summer. There is an overflow car park and parking available across the road. More detail to be given nearer the time but obviously the earlier you get there, the better. Parking is free by the way!!
Polite request - does anyone have any traffic cones they could bring along please? Might be a way of securing parking spaces.
Feel free to post up any questions or you can e-mail me if you prefer, address in profile.
solamanda - I've lost your e-mail address, could you e-mail me please? Thanks.
Also Aleigh, bless her, is a screamer and it may unnerve some folk
tis true 😆
Afan would be much better 😉
David... disappointed mate... you know you want to go to Wales!
Everybody keep talking about that place, so I will give a go, count me in! My October's week ends are all full, and now my November's are almost getting full as well. No rest.
SolamandaYou should lead a group for jumps and drops.
That's the plan, are you coming G?
Yep ride there regular at Swinley.
Good fun, but you do have to look out for young T-wats
walking up has your coming down runs such as Baby Maker etc.
Il be up for it !
i'm going to try to make it.i usually ride herts shore religiously on sundays but hopefully i can make it unless work gets in the way 🙂
Should be able to come, just got to figure a way of getting there from Portsmouth, sometimes I wish I could drive, not often though.
theres about 3 train stations within about a 10 min ride of Swinley, no excuses!
If I can get the time off work yes please. It would be the slackers group for me 😛
Cheers
Andy
Whats the nearest train station?
Martins Heron
Cheers! Right 7am train from Pompey it is, looking forward to it, umm I will be in your group C-G.
Lou x
10 mins down a fast-flowing road. You should be able to get a train to Reading from Portsmouth and then change for London Waterloo via Feltham. Or if you get a train to Surbiton I can fetch you from the station no problem.
Thanks for the offer HC but there might be 3 of us ladies.
I'll be coming from near Reading way so happy to pickup one/two from Reading Station on the way.
3 ladies I can manage without bikes, sorry!
If I'm coming I could cart a bike or two up from Surbiton (I live across the river from HC).
is it one group or more??
Thanks for the offer HC but there might be 3 of us ladies.
Oh-oh! Will they be some of those single girls looking for more than a day's biking? if so i'd better not turn up 🙄
Martin's Heron is closest, take the Reading to Waterloo line.
Anyone going from Newbury(ish) that I could blag a lift with?? 😉 There could be a cake/Haribo incentive...
I will be heading up from Southampton with one spare seat and room for one bike if you dare get in a car with me!
Ditto the WCA post. Depends on Dezb, but there may the possibility of a lift from Pompey as i am coming from HI.
Hope its not minus 7 this time.
I will need to confirm with the girls (emailed the GWR girls today), but if its just little old me I would love a lift!
Thanks for the offer Nick and stm. DezB is near Petersfield, is that right? He might be coming to Q E Park on the 10th October if your up for it too?
Had our first weekly ride last night, I was happy to see it featured on the strong island blog. Hope we make it through the winter and dont pussy out!
XC_PK, might be able to give you a lift, it all depends on whether I need to collect someone from Basingstoke. I'll be coming from Andover so it's only just up the road for me. I'll keep you informed. Where in Newbury?
I'm coming from Kingsclere (near Newbury), there's a few of us coming from this area, anybody fancy hiring a mini bus for the day? 😕
MM Im up in Shaw (top right bit of Newbury)
PM If there is a space in a car for me that would be great. Otherwise hire a van to lob the bikes in?? How many are coming from your way?
looks like it's going to be a great day! really looking forward to it! my skillz should be top notch cos i'll be at afan the day before (of course anyone that knows me knows that's total rubbish! 😉 )
LoulaBella - can you please remove the details of this from your Facebook page. It is an event for the Singletrackworld community, many of whom I have had the privilege of meeting and riding with over the years.
Whilst I do not have any objection to people inviting others, I don't want it advertised to all and sundry and particularly not as a singletons cattle market.
Thank you.
Sisters of Gnarr are gonna rock Swinley 😯 8) 😀 !!!!!!!!!!!!
Im sorry, its been taken down, just a bit enthusiastic!
well mr o...........that's the plan!
yeah cause you 2 got SKILLZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and im banking on learning a few more in afan dontcha know.....no pressure or anything! 😆
is it one group or more??
I think CG is planning on getting people who can guide different groups pencilled in and then work out what actually happens depending on numbers on the day. I'd be showing people the best singletrack and jumpy stuff if enough fancy that rather than a longer xc ride.
Unfortunately due to the nature of the trails at swinley large groups don't really work if you want to have a good ride.
The morning ride would be few hours and meet up for lunch. I'm happy to show people more stuff after lunch.
Elaine - Did you get my email?
C'mon, just turn up, no attitude but plenty of humour instead, have fun.
Last time CG organised Swinley it was great. Broken frames, snapped chains, frozen Camelbacks, lovely!
im deffo there unless i get booked for trailbuilding 🙂
hope to come along ride most weeks in the lookout always good fun
Will pen this one into my Diary...
Been a bit absent from here over the last couple of months (mainly due to work), and most weekends have been taken up with cricket over the summer! Which has now ended so will be doing more bike riding again...
All I need is a lift share (nudge nudge wink wink...) 😉
All going well, I will be there. I can also offer a lift to anybody coming down from Herts/North London.
solamanda - not received your e-mail. Did you use the one in my profile or my old one? You pretty much summed it up 8)
jedi - thank you! It will be a pleasure to meet you 😀
Hairychested - you're scaring people!
Everyone - there's going to be a fantastic turnout 8) For those who haven't been to Swinley before, you're in for a real treat!
cinnamon_girl, count me in plus one
Saracens HO! (niche bike- I think therefore I am bike)
Gephaudio - anything goes! At the Purbecks ride on Sunday there was a retro bike from the early 90's with some really cool paint work 8)
I wanted that Klein really badly. I have accepted that I'm just not good enough to ride it though 🙁
Rich - loved that paint work! Couldn't believe it was the original. But cantilevers/V brakes whatever they were? No, couldn't live without discs!! Or suspension forks!!
I had a close encounter with a Weimaraner on that ride - it decided to go through the gate near Old Harry Rocks at the very last minute 😯 It was very nearly an OTB experience and definitely would have been with any other brakes!!
ill be in the chilled group and maybe help riders skills if wanted
Christ you're going to be busy Jedi 🙂
It's odd CG, but I've found discs to have caused quite a few OTB moments for me due to panic braking. Cantis would probably be an improvement!
