Got my new front frame replacement of orange after a crack, finishing building I go to put my my shock on and the shock pin does not go in the mounting holes on the new frame. I’m thinking what the hell, it’s the exact same year frame.

Turns out orange did not drill the paint out the shock mounting holes, Orange QC right there. Anyway I literally hate the idea of putting a drill near my bike, but now I’ve got to drill the paint out the holes. The hole is 8mm so what 8 drill bit is best to use. Do I just use the normal 8mm Allan key style bit or do I use the actual 8mm drilling bit. I wana make sure I get it right before starting .

Thanks All.

I'd use a stepped drill bit in a cordless drill, going nice n easy n controlled.

Just paint? Can you not take it off with a blade or sandpaper

A stepped drill? Really? Just run an 8mm drill through.

Have a word with your local friendly machinist or toolmaker. The tool you need is a reamer, designed to finish that hole to a very tight tolerance and will not snatch on the soft alu of the frame.
You could use a reamer by hand in a tap wrench too.

Or an 8mm drill bit in a tap wrench. Do no use a stepped bit under any circumstances. To easy to end up oversize. I would be doing it by hand for safety

If it's just paint use an 8mm hss drill bit on a low speed. Sorted. Or contact orange and get them to sort it out.

I would defo try a reamer first before a drill bit, but whichever you use, try to use a bit with a hex or square shank section.
Tap wrenches are not known for their vice like grip, and the shaped shank will prevent the bit slipping ,if you decide to do it by hand, which I definitely would do first.

Nooooooooooo! Do not allow that item any where near your frame.
You will need something like this:
https://www.mscdirect.co.uk/HLR-10080J/SEARCH:KEYWORD/product.html

But they can be had for about a fiver on amazon.
Not really much use around the house, so probably better off asking around if anyone you know has one. Or buy one, but its probably gonna be a once in a lifetime application.
The ones with a plain shank are for use in a hand held drill chuck ( not really, but if you had a radial arm drill or similar you wouldnt be asking, i suspect). The ones with a square shank section are for use by hand in a tap wrench. Both will work well.
A drill bit will do the job as well but more chance of snatching in the soft alu.

This. You don't need power tools to scrape off a bit of paint.

Yep, I'd just be using a round file.

Sand paper around 7mm drill bit and do it by hand

Start by running around the top with an exacto, stanley knife or deburrer. If there is stuff deeper inside then run through any straight 8mm drill bit (i.e not a masonry one).

You'd need to do something especially hamfisted to start chewing up the metal as the paint is quite a bit softer.
You could probably do it by literally holding and twisting the bit with your fingers.

Exactly. If it needs more than this, then there is something wrong.

I’d use a rat tail file if you have one. Lightly around the hole will take the paint off but not any metal. No need for that hole to accurate so no need for a reamer or anything like that. You can use a drill but be very careful as it might not self centre very well and of you’re ham fisted could easily snatch and cut into the metal. In fact I wouldn’t use a power tool at all.
