[Closed] Strava Live Segments - descents no longer sync to Garmin etc

I just realised I missed the memo on this one, and have spent hours messing around with my Edge doing factory resets and linking back to Strava.

So any segment with a gradient of less than -0.25% will no longer sync to 3rd party devices or apps:

https://www.mbr.co.uk/news/strava-removes-descents-from-live-segments-383240

I'm proud to say that it turns out that is the case for 100% of my starred segments, so it appeared that the Strava link was broken. I just added a climb and can see it on my Edge 1000.

Does anyone know if there is a workaround? Can you export a Strava segment as a .gpx or .fit file and manually load it onto the Garmin?

thanks

Strava were cited in a legal case in the States when someone was going for a KOM on a descent (road I think) and killed someone. So corporate CYA has led to downhill segments being sidelined. The -0.25% is probably the minimum gradient that can reliably be determined to be "downhill".

What workaround are you after? The "Live" feature comes from Strava so if they've turned it off for descents (and presumably removed it from their API so no-one else can create an app to do it) then it's gone. Just figure out where a segment starts and go for it.

I used the Strava to Garmin sync to locate the start of descents in areas I don't know well, especially in Europe in the summer. Invaluable for off piste stuff. I'm never getting KOMs, so never cared about timings.

What happens if you put a .fit file in the Garmin's Segment folder? Or add it as a Course from .fit or .gpx? Like I said, I only want to navigate the segment, not race.

You'll be able to load segments as very short routes via the "New Files" folder but depending on your unit you'll only be able to view one at once. But that would be enough to find and follow them.

Quite how Strava/Garmin manage segments and in particular downhill ones isn't something I've looked at. Here's Garmin's help page on creating them in Connect - https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=l8JZsm5MAbAqaWs22qHcn5

I've got an older 810 so this may not work on other units but I wanted to go hunting in a new place for the 'secret' runs. I put all the segments individually on the unit as courses then set them to be permanently displayed on the map. It was then just a case of looking at the map screen and following that each time. Had to use a chrome Add-on to get the .gpx files for some of them, others were drawn roughly on MemoryMap and transferred that way. About 30 mins of faff but it meant I had a solid day on the bike in an unfamiliar area having fun rather than wandering aimlessly.

I'll often view some of the top 10 or so (recent) rides on the segments I'm looking for, then pick one of those and download the GPX and use it as a route. Alternatively, trailforks can help with this too
