Just so we can follow the live laps thing and see who are the fast boys and girls, the slackers and the "hard as nails" brigade

It would be nice if forumites let us know what name they are racing under so we can follow them on http://live.sportident.co.uk/home/multistage/stage/results.html?multistageid=620a0953-b550-4ce2-8bc2-af107b6d1a17&multistageclass=off

Richpips and Minipips are there. Tom is solo again but as he's only 11 he needs to be accompanied by Dad for the whole thing.

crazylegs - what name are they running under? I'd like to see how minipips does. IIRC kids only have to be accompanied during the dark .

Minipips = Tom Seipp.
He's done it before on agreement with the organisers but they are breaking their own "no kids" rule so the understanding was that he would be accompanied at all times. Rich himself is a veteran of numerous solo 24hr races.

Last couple of times I was there there were a good few kids and in daylight they rode on their own. Maybe older than minipips tho.

Ta for the info tho.

Minipips is 68th solo out of 100 at the moment. He does cheat however by weighing nothing so has no weight to get up the hill ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'm down the road a bit on the banks of Loch Ness. Cloudless, no wind, around 3C but chilly in the woods with a ground frost that hasn't shifted all day.

I can't imagine it could be any more perfect.

I'm out after one lap.

I was considering not doing the race because of an unfortunate growth in a tender place which is getting surgery in a couple of weeks, but I figured I'd see how much I could do before it got too sore.

As it turned out it was the least of my problems. I couldn't see a thing.

My glasses kept misting up, so I removed them (as I usually end up doing in the 'Puffer). However I've developed cataracts in the last year or so, and in the hazy/sun conditions it was like looking at a photo of a cheap digital camera taken into the sun.

After a couple of crashes, nothing major, just comedy, I realised I was likely to hurt myself, or worse someone else. The main problem being the huge entry list this year meant that I continually had faster riders coming up on me so I was trying to keep out of the way by riding in the rough edges.

I rode the course the other day with no problem, but different lighting, and no other riders to worry about.

It's a bit of a worry for cycling in poor light, and I'm going to have to do something about it.

I think I may have to make myself an extra long white stick... ๐Ÿ™‚

BTW I'm sharing my tent with Markus Stitz who rode round the world last year on a single speed. He's there for the crack more than the race.

He's No 53 if you want to watch out for him.

77 year old Ron Smith is going ok too.

Very foggy, cold mist for most of the course. But absolutely beautiful up top with clear sunshine. (While I was there)

Shame Epicyclo but there is being stupid ( entering the puffer) and being really really stupid - hurting yourself while doing so

My auntie has just had one cataract done and says it's hugely better; now champing at the bit for the other side...

Even machines break down sometimes.
Passed him trudging up a climb at Relentless having blown himself up. He described it as a 'bad day at the office' ๐Ÿ˜€

But yes, don't know how the top guys do it, so fast for so long. Shows exactly how terrible the rest of us really are.

The GF is doing it, I'm looking after the baby at the hotel!

She got taken out pretty badly by some prick overtaking her as she was going down the slab. Has knocked her confidence somewhat ๐Ÿ™

That's a nasty place to have a fall.

The overtaking this year seemed more frantic/ruthless.

Everything is freezing up. Caravan gas, brakes, rear mechs, freehubs and there are random ice sheets all over the course. 13 laps done and wishing it was tomorrow lunchtime. Think we're lying 4th but realistically, unless the superstars ahead have a disaster, that's the best we can hope for.

I got 11 laps in before calling it a day. I bashed my knee slipping on ice and it's sore to pedal. The course was running well and the new finish section is just brilliant.

How long's a lap? Distance rather than time. since the latter is going to be slower on later laps. The last update as I write this has Keith Forsyth on 28 laps

Kudos to you, I did relentless last year but couldn't face the grimness of strathpuffer. Going for twentyfour12 instead

When do you have to stop or are stopped? Is it 24hrs are up then you stop the next time you cross the finish line or do the organisers look at your last lap and say "you aren't going to make another lap inside 24hrs" and pull you?

Keith Forsyth is marked as having done 30 laps in 23:55 but is still shown as being "active" so presumably is still riding the course.

No Internet at last night, I was doing it as a quad we managed 38 laps and the fastest lap. Great event I would say a "hard" Puffer the ice section were really tricky in the early morning hours. Good to see lots of people out all night, lots of people stopping holding the mechs over our fire to get them thawed out.

The quickest fix is to pee on them. Seriously.

But the best fix is to remove it and go singlespeed. ๐Ÿ™‚
