I have just got some Stans Alpine rims my first tubeless wheel set and it it works so well. On checking the tyres I see there are some large thorns in them should these be removed?

If you had a split tyre and had to put a tube in it the thorns would then have to be sorted out or you would puncture the tube.

I feel your quandry! I would make sure you can hear a bit of latex sloshing about in there, make a cup of tea, then pull out the thorn and watch stan's special relish work it's magic!!

A mate left a nail in a ust tyre for months. He eventually hit a rock in just the right place to stick the nail through the rim.

i tend to just leave the thorns in because there is always the risk of the solution not sealing the hole.

what harm are they doing if you just leave them in the tyre?

I wouldn't rely on a thorn staying in the hole indefinitely. One day it might fall out and the tyre will go down unexpectedly.
If they are big thorns, say more than 2mm at the hole, I'd pull them out and plug the tyre.

It's a great feeling when you pull them out and after a quick squirt of tyrejizz the hole seals. 😀

To be honest I have never looked but something must be happening because on my tubed hard tail I get punctures almost every other ride while I have never had a puncture [that I have known about]on the tubeless F/S and yes I will get round to putting tubeless wheels on the H/T when I can afford it.

If you run tubeless with spooge but carry inner tubes as the get-me-home-solution, you have too, otherwise you'll be doing it on the trail as well as sorting the tyre.

I use anchovies and tyre patches so I don't bother. If I had a nail or screw I would though.
