@chesterrockwell yes that is me 🙂

i actually plan on doing a short video update on the bike this coming week when out on an offroad ride (will try and go in depth on the parts). hopefully cherhill monument as the views are great up there and not too far away from us (am very unfit atm due to a mix of depression, laziness and the awful weather we have had in the uk  until now).

Think I read somewhere that the Chisel FS has been discontinued. Seems a shame as it looks a great bike. There was some confusion as to whether it has been killed off  entirely or is going to be tweaked and/or rebranded as the Epic Alloy. Yours sounds fun!

I just had the first issue with my Chisel.

I managed to blow the shock after a little huck to flat, less than half a metre.

I probably should have been keeping an eye on the shock pressure, because it's seen some things.

Wasn't covered by warranty either, which was a bit shit, but probably my own fault.

That SID shock on Merlin would have been a good upgrade if I'd known. Can you run the remote lockout shock without the remote? I don't use the lockout anyway.

Without the lockout cable attached, a sidluxe has the lockout full open.

I'd seen a dealer in the US suggest this on a Facebook group. I asked @GuyKesteven(say his name 3 times and he appears) about it and he said he got a unclear response from Spech UK about it.

Ey up @ogden the cryptic response I got from Specialized was: “Hmm, not dropped just not replaced right now…”

make of that what you will I guess 🤷‍♂️

that seems a really silly idea if they are stopping making them (or putting on hold as mr kesteven suggested above). not everyone can afford an expensive carbon bike (or want one). i went for a chisel fs because it was within my reach to afford one (was paying it off in installments still).

a lot of people seem to love the bikes (def include me in that) and what about young riders who want an affordable xc full sus who don't have wealthy parents etc.

wont the bike companies think of the not so rich people 😀

Yup - both my fork and shock are both RL, but I never bothered to fit the remote because I never felt the need. 👌

I hope mine goes to a good home for that reason - but there's a risk is someone will strip it to make a quick buck. 🤷‍♂️

Some people just want to start out on something basic, but upgradable. That's exactly what I did - I didn't know whether I'd properly get back into the world of MTB, so there's no way I'd have forked out on anything more expensive. But after a few miles on my legs, I'm happy to do that. 👍

PS Hoping they're just beavering away in the background updating it to the EE8 geo?

@Oms you selling a chisel?

I made the mistake of trying a different bike...

...but I don't have the space for two MTBs (affairs can get expensive)! 😂

@oms where have you got it up for sale? What did you try that you liked better?

I've tried a few:
- E8
- Scalpel

My flip chip is in the higher position on the Chisel. I've also lowered the bars a bit. It definitely helps on steep climbs. The Scalpel geo might suit a bit better.

Both had a bit more zing - difficult to describe. Something to do with being carbon?

A quick search shows the Chisel available with good discounts, if they haven't sold as well as intended I can see why Specialized would put it on hiatus.

Might be a little bit of all three?

Making an alloy one makes sense when you're production factories are flat out making carbon ones as quickly as they can be sold and keeping prices high so there's a market segment to fill.

Making more stock of the alloy ones when there's a new model in 18months is pointless as they'd just end up discounted, better to just sell existing stock as less of a discount.

And maybe it was just a bit niche?  The answer to "what entry level XC race bike?" has always traditionally been a hardtail because it's both cheaper and lighter.  At WC level the Epic FS makes sense as courses got more gnarly, but that's very niche.

what do we reckon the going rate is for a used chisel fs frame? I am thinking of moving mine on (i fancy than new Forbidden Reya as a lightweight xc/trail sort of bike), but have no clue what a reasonable price would be. And is it advantageous to sell as a frame, fork, stem, bar combo, or just as a frame only?

@v7fmp

That's annoying! I've added an email address to about me. Could you email that please and I'll remove it again afterwards. https://singletrackworld.com/participant/nixie/ (though might need the websites cache to update).

@v7fmp will do, the cached page hasn't updated with your change yet but I'll keep checking. My link above appears to have got corrupted (maybe when I can edited the post).
